Ex-legislator Archibald C. Christian calls for national household survey
Speaking on Talking Points on ZBVI 780 AM on Monday, July 13, 2026, Christian argued that accurate, basic data is needed so policymakers can plan effectively.
“To plan a better life for people in this country, I need to know certain things about them,” he said.
“I don't want to know how many times you shop. I don't want to know what kind of clothes you buy. I don't want to know how many persons come to your house to sleep during the week.”

He added that what the government and policy makers should want to know are basic things like, “Where you live, who you are employed by. What is your salary? How many children live in the house? What’s your rent?”
Christian said collecting those core facts would allow the government to design targeted programmes and investments, stating, “From that, I can plan the next stage of the country's development.”
He added, without that, “you shoot yourself in the foot, and you're guessing.”
The Virgin Islands’ Population and Housing Census, originally planned for 2020, began in June 2023 and was scheduled for completion in December 2023.
In October 2024, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) was still trying to recruit enumerators or census officers.
