'Every nickel, every penny I managed was spent on the people'- Hon Maduro-Caines

Junior Minister for Tourism Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines (R6) has said she has nothing to hide in relation to how funds were spent in her District, as the debate on the controversial leaked audit report on Assistance Grants commenced in the House of Assembly (HoA) on Thursday, March 9, 2023. ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Junior Minister for Tourism Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines (R6) has said she has nothing to hide in relation to how funds were spent in her District, as the debate on the audit report on Assistance Grants from January 2019 to May 2022 commenced in the House of Assembly (HoA) on Thursday, March 9, 2023.

“Over the past few days, many have been shocked by information, figures and names found in this…audit report which was leaked. While I am not condoning any misconduct concerning the way in which this document was released, I believe that the people do deserve to know where public funds are spent. I’m however concerned for the youngest persons on this list, whose identities were splashed across the territory unexpectedly,” she said.

The Junior Minister noted that many have written to her seeking assistance and she has assisted where she could.

'I did not personally assign over $1M in grants'

“I want to make it abundantly clear that I did not personally assign over one million dollars in grants of the amount presented. I was directly able to assist persons out of my district allocation, which is $125,000 per year,” she noted.

According to the Auditor General, Sonia M. Webster, in her report, $1,086,481.00 in assistance grants was distributed in the Sixth District between January 2019 and May 2022.

Hon Maduro-Caines said during the COVID season, Government allocated some $300,000 to assist persons in District 6.

She explained that most of the $300,000 allocated went towards assisting people who couldn’t pay their rent.

“The $300, 000 was part of this money allocated along with the $125,000 per year…those two sums alone amount to $800,000 and you could imagine the other $200,000 plus was spent in the district on much-needed projects…Who want to get a breakdown, I’m certainly sure that they can have access if they go to Finance or whoever to find where the other $200,000 have gone,” Hon Maduro- Caines noted.

She said she is aware that questions are being asked as to whether she has received over a million dollars and where it went.

“The $200,000 plus, like I said, is public information, and the projects such as Fisherman Wharf and a few others is public. Every dollar, every dime, every nickel and every penny that I manage was spent on the people,” the Junior Minister said.

'I have nothing to hide'

Hon Maduro-Caines noted; however, that in reality, this kind of money pales in comparison to what is really needed to fix the social problems the territory faces.

“Whether you applied for assistance through me or Social Development or any other public office, the list simply breaks down how much money was received within the district but not necessarily from the $125,000 grant that I administered.

“I hope that this explanation helps some of the persons that are out there making accusations or asking questions, as I’ve always been transparent and clear in my dealings and I can’t allow any confusion to paint a picture that I would have control of that much money and would not have helped each and everyone in the district,” she noted.

Hon Maduro-Caines said some are acting like it was a death sentence handed down.

“I don’t have anything to hide and certainly not in my pocket,” she said.

She really doesnt get the point? What people? Who are you to arbitrarily decide who gets public money? Show us an accounting of what you spent. Why is your story and the governments story different ? Did any of your relatives get money? And lots more unanswered questions.

Too little too late. Oh you’re final speech was very elementary. We need a more educated voice. We thought you were a bit better than Hodge but you’re not.

The NDP pushed you down our throat(a). But it wasn’t for our benefit in the 6th district it’s was for theirs. You made up a number.

Now we want representation not just a number. We need a voice that’s why most of us a going with Myron.

You had your chance to stay with the NDP in the opposition and fight but you took the easy way out you crossed the floor and again just to make up a number.

You have no fight in you, you never will fight for us simply because you can’t. You are a compassionate and caring lady but we need a fighter. You should just sit this election out as a candidate. You did all you could and we thank but WE making a SHIFT in the SIXTH.

We love you and God bless.

You summed that up nicely and respectfully I might add. Those are my observations and sentiments as well.

I think the Honorable Lady is a decent person but as you said and I agree, she is not a fighter.

I also disliked that she jumped ship when the tough got going for political expediency. I don't like that kind of behavior in politicians. Win or loose, stick to your principles and convictions. I as a voter value that more.

Honorable Alvera Maduro Caines is speaking facts. The social ills of the BVI are huge. People have not catch themselves since Irma and Maria and now Covid. This is why I cannot kill the VIP for trying to help. The hurt is REAL!

When Myron was in politics no one asked him what he did with his grant money especially the millions he allegedly gave away to friends and family from the Ministry of Education. Not even an audit was done. But now they want to try to crucify Alvera and VIP for helping in the greatest time of need in the history of the BVI during Covid. What a double standard.

Ask them which law firm got some of the $8 million for the plane that we never got but the $8 million is gone and the UK colonial plot is conveniently ignoring any active investigations on it because those involved have sold us out for their freedom including this Minister of Health.

But just the other day she said she could not get anything done in her district because getting anything done was like pulling teeth. She flip flopping in words same way she flip flopping in actions. Why is the public so gullible. Obviously, it is time for a change! Take a back seat and learn how it's done since you couldn't do it yourself. Steupes

Are you serious? I can understand if Andrew fool her and told her she is wasting time in the oppersition with Penn and nothing is being done in her District, but when she saw all the corruption taking place she stood with him just incase Flax jump ship and go independant. Then you went over Long Bush with him and the VIP saying The Grass Is Greener on the other side? That means you are no better then him. Now everone is asking how did you spend the grass money?

I am fully aware of the constitutional fact, that a man is innocent until proven guilty. But it seems to me that a lot of you supporting Myron to be elected is missing one basic thing, the fact that he have a criminal charge pending against him before a court of law. If his party won the next election and he himself won his seat, he cannot sit in cabinet. On another note, if he is found guilty in the court, he will have to relinquish his seat and then a by election will have to take place. Is this what you people really want.

This is why we need districts councils so we can monitor the fox in the hen house. Lack of revenue is the district's greatest lament so it makes sense to create some kind of revenue generating within the district for the districts.

From 2017 hurricane to the pandemic, she has never visit not even the elderly to ask how they make it. Seems like if you are not from Baughters Bay or related to her you got nothing.
