Euphoric Sky Dancers & BVI Optimum Sky Dancers Shine @Miami Carnival
The two local dance groups showcased their talent during the 41st celebration of Miami Carnival’s Jouvert edition and the Miami parade.
The two groups regularly unite to represent the Virgin Islands at various carnivals and festivals worldwide.
'Cultural pride & emotion'
In an exclusive interview with Virgin Islands News Online, Ashawn C. W. Crandall, the owner of Euphoric Sky Dancers, expressed that representing the Virgin Islands in Miami is about more than just performance; it embodies cultural pride and emotion.
“Carrying the roots and history of the unique Moko Jumbie tradition on an international stage allows us to step out not just as dancers but as ambassadors for the Virgin Islands, demonstrating that our culture is alive and vibrant,” Crandall stated.
He added that this showcase of Virgin Islands tradition fosters unity among people abroad, mentioning, “After the Miami event, we had many individuals expressing interest in joining us next year. It feels like each year is getting better.”
Crandall emphasised that this initiative also serves to inspire the younger generation to remain connected with their roots and uphold the Virgin Islands' reputation wherever they go.
He shared that for him, representing the Virgin Islands in Miami holds great importance, calling it a legacy in the works. "We aim to take this to many different places and raise our VI flag no matter where we are,” he stated.
Regarding their experience in Miami, Crandall noted, “The experience was different, but it was fantastic to display our talent and our flag at Miami Carnival. We showcased Moko Jumbies alongside the BVI Optimum Sky Dancers, who partook in various events with us as well.”
He revealed that approximately 15 Moko Jumbies, including participants from Tortola, St Thomas, and Anguilla, collaborated with Euphoric Sky Dancers for the festivities.
'We always hold the VI flag high'- Hugh M. David Jr
Meanwhile, Hugh M. David Jr., co-owner of BVI Optimum Sky Dancers, expressed similar sentiments in his exclusive interview with Virgin Islands News Online.
He emphasised the importance of their collaboration for Miami Carnival, stating, “It’s crucial. We strive to have fun while representing the VI, especially since we are a small island and many people may not recognise our flag compared to larger Caribbean nations.”
David added, “When we go to these events, we always hold the VI flag high and showcase the talent we have in the VI. We want people to know they’ve seen the Jumbies at Miami Carnival, so when they visit us, they recognise them and aren’t surprised by our presence.”
Looking ahead, David shared his optimism for next year, stating, “This year was awesome, but I believe next year will be even better. We had over 60 Jumbies this year, and we hope to triple that number next time.”
He encouraged people to register for next year’s event, noting, “Registration starts in the spring and there’s no age limit. As long as the child or adult is willing to dance on stilts and participate, they are welcome to join us and have fun.”
'Source of pride & revenue'
The BVI Optimum Skydancers is a nonprofit organisation that enjoys sky dancing while actively preserving the culture of the Virgin Islands. The group has been around for a long time, but officially reformed in 2022 after the COVID-19 pandemic, with just seven Jumbies participating in the parade. Since then, their numbers have grown significantly, with over 60 Jumbies this year and even more expected next year.
Meanwhile, the Euphoric Sky Dancers have been together for three years, with a mission to give back to the community, motivate the younger generation, and demonstrate that Moko Jumbie dancing is not limited to Carnival; it is a year-round tradition that serves as a source of pride and revenue.
