ESHS Students host SBA Track & Field Classic!
The atmosphere amongst the athletes was relaxed for once though as this time it was the “Officials” and their ability to organize and run a track meet that was under the microscope; the event formed an important part of the CXC Exam in Physical Education.
Chairperson, J’Maal Alexander oversaw a smooth opening ceremony featuring a march pass, the raising of the Territorial Flag, the singing of the National Anthem by Elizabeth Jeremiah and also a rendition of the Territorial song.
Ephraim Penn was on hand to witness it all as Angelita Bernard offered the Invocation, DJeMoyia Smith welcomed everyone and ESHS Principal, Wade W. Tobin, gave his remarks. Kala Penn then gave the Athletes Oath followed by Deshaun Douglas issuing the Officials Oath and the games began.
The High Jump immediately grabbed the attention as in the Under 17 age group, marshaled by Nelda Huggins and Dominic Adams among others, Kala Penn and Ashley Penn renewed their rivalry with a cross between Limbo and High Jump with some interesting warm up routines thrown in for good measure. The Event was eventually won by Ashley with Zahria Corion winning the U15 version ahead of Akisha Robinson.
Huggins had to leave her post to take part in the 100m in which she held off the challenge of Kala and also Sh’keida Lavacia all under the watchful eyes of many other 5th formers standing in as timers and line judges.
Jasmine Dalmeida and Joshua Ragnauth were recording everything on film and Soraya Durante was on hand to interview the athletes as they finished their events
In the Under 15 100m, Kiara Huggins led home the field but according to her interview, “I felt I could have done better!” K’Cie Moses took the tape for the boys and was asked about the headwind. “I got a good start, but had to change my stride due to the wind.”
Ronique Todman, who won the U17 Boy’s race, claimed during his interview that “I took it easy as I’m saving myself for later races.”
Pedro Suarez took Javelin Honours and, despite being pleased, noted “If I get the mechanics down I can break records!”
Rhennie Phipps leant a guiding hand on the microphone and also coined the phrase “the Battle of the Penn’s” as the high jump took place and it certainly was as both girls gave an exhibition of their ability to push each other higher and higher; Ashley finally came out the winner. “I tried my best and finally beat her,” she exclaimed.
That neatly summed up the day too as it was all about everyone trying their best, knowing their roles and completing their duties. Some 18 plus events took place during the day and there was hardly a glitch and if something didn’t quite go according to plan then Patrick Harrigan was on hand to offer advice and keep things rolling.
The students have to complete and submit their final reports on the day, but from what was on show and how it all went then they all just might achieve personal bests in their Physical Education results.
