ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) confirmed that officers responded to an incident at the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) yesterday, Tuesday, April 28, 2026, involving a student in distress.

“The student was safely secured with the assistance of school officials and emergency responders, including the Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Service,” the RVIPF said in its statement.

While the police department said no further details will be provided, reports indicate that the student in question attempted to jump from a school building.

The student was allegedly under the influence

Reports also allege that the student, who is in Grade 8, was under the influence of substances prohibited in schools.

The RVIPF added that enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.

Last year, reports of illegal substances at secondary schools across the Virgin Islands emerged.

The Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports revealed that these substances included alcohol, marijuana-infused foods, and sexual enhancement drugs.

Zero Tolerance Policy

Last year, multiple students were suspended after being caught in possession of these substances.

The ministry has not yet released a statement on this recent incident; however, in a  January 2025 statement, the ministry indicated its support for schools’ zero-tolerance policy.
