ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The postponements are over, the A.O. Shirley Ground is all decked out and the Seventh Day Adventist’s Drum Corps is ready to lead the athletes out as the 42nd Elmore Stoutt High School Inter House Track and Field Championships finally gets underway this morning, Wednesday May 8, 2013.

After the Preliminary events, Fleming House have a slight lead over defending Champions, Carlisle House, who lifted their first Championship in 28 years last year.

Fleming have 168 points, Carlisle 150, Lettsome 117 and O’Neal 85

The Opening Ceremony is scheduled for 10 A.M.m with the March Pass and addresses from Acting Premier Dr. the Honourable Kedrick D. Pickering, along with Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn.

The ever popular Cheerleading Competition, won by Carlisle House in 2012, is now scheduled for 1 P.M. as some of the performers have to sit CXC Exams in the morning, but no doubt the crowds who usually gather to witness the moves and gyrations won’t mind the wait at all.

Although some consternation has been expressed as to what some of the Athletes are being allowed to do by their Clubs, the 42nd Championship will be the first time the general public, family, teachers and school colleagues will have to watch and welcome several members of the Carifta Games team that did so well in the Bahamas.

As to what events they will be in remains unconfirmed but Nelda Huggins will be defending her 100m and 200m School Records and probably lowering them. She ran 12 flat in the 100m last year, a time she has lowered significantly since, and 24.57 in the 200m.

Judine Lacey, who announced herself to the Regional stage with a scintillating run in the 4 x 400m relay at the Carifta Games, will also be looking to lower her 200m mark.

A battle royale is promised in the girls long and high jumps too with Ashley Penn and Kala Penn continuing their friendly rivalry, although both will have to watch out for L’Tsha Fahie.

Interestingly, fans may well see Eldred Henry throwing a javelin too and no one would bet against the “big man” setting new school records to go with the Discuss and Shot Put.

Junior athletes will also be on show with Beyonce Defreitas, Rakeel Jack and Jelani Norman headlining the list to look out for.

Stalwarts like Lakeisha Warner, Tarika Moses, Trevia and Tynelle Gumbs, Deshaun Douglas and possibly even J’Maal Alexander will also be running and throwing themselves into the competition as each house looks to secure a victory and bragging rights for the year to come.

Weather, exams and other conflicts may have dampened the exciting build up to this year’s championships, but all those making the effort to attend the 42nd Inter House Championships this morning can expect to witness one of the most competitive meets in recent times.
