ESHS Fifth Formers taught skills of adapting to adulthood
Realizing this and determined to put a stop to the wrong decisions and choices being made by young teenagers in the Virgin Islands (VI), the graduating class of BVI High School (BVIHS) 1992, now Elmore Stoutt High, held a symposium for the graduating class of Elmore Stoutt High School 2012.
The symposium that was held at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex, yesterday June 18, 2012, was said to show the students the do’s and don’ts of the real world.
President of the BVIHS class of 1992, Delia Jon Baptist said “after listening to different comments from the students about them not being ready to enter into the job market. We came together as a class and wanted to give back to the students of the VI, show them the dos and the don’ts.”
She added that their first idea was to introduce the students to different jobs but because it wasn’t feasible they came up with the next best thing, which is to host a symposium. “We try to find ways to reach the students and find ways for them to be productive citizens.”
She added that that they “are preparing them for adulthood. Even if a student is not graduating, they may have done some supplementary work so they can get a High School Diploma. So they still need preparation and we are helping them get ready for life.”
The symposium was facilitated by different individuals in the VI community who spoke on different topics such as; Starting on your own, Personal Budgeting, Career inventory, Leaving for College, Career Planning, Starting my own Business, College 101, Healthy Dating Relationships, The flair that is you, Making a change for the better, Taking a chance to become successful and Faith and Fellowship.
“We felt that if we try to find a speaker to bring in, they might get their message across but not in the same way as a local. I think that students would relate better to homegrown people and people who they see in their everyday lives.”Along with the symposium, the graduating class of 1992 will be handing out trophies at the ESHS graduation but not to the students who expect them.
According to Ms. Baptiste, the awards are going to be for the students who overcame their adversities and are graduating.
