ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – An all-girl Secondary school team from the Elmore Stout High School (ESHS) has emerged victorious at the Ministry of Education’s 2024 annual Inter-Secondary School National Debating Competition.

Under the moot, “All Students Exiting Secondary School in the Virgin Islands Should attain Technical Qualification,” ESHS presented as the proposition while St. Georges as the opposition, in an intense intellectual battle this morning, March 13, 2024, in the finals.

Following the delivery of the prepared speeches, ESHS facing St. Georges Secondary was just .5 points ahead of their opponent with 483.5 and 483 scores respectively.

With the competition heated, St George’s calls for a more well-rounded education and curriculum while adding that not everyone is cut out for technical skills, was not enough to take down ESHS and their .5 point lead.

Technical skills result in wealth of options - ESHS

ESHS argued that learning technical skills brings a wealth of options to choose from in the job market with all that is needed is a ‘foot’ in the door towards upward mobility in the workforce.

Other schools in this year’s 2024 competition included Cedar International School, Bragada Flax Secondary, Ciboney Centre for Excellence, and the Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies.

The Preliminary round of the competition commenced on February 7 and 8, 2024, and was followed by intense semi-final debates on February 28 and 29, 2024.

For the St. Georges Team, Ms Yasmeen Said was recognized for her debate skills and unique style while the best debater recognition was copped by Ms Niomi Onwufuju of the ESHS team.

Congratulations to the brave students but most importantly the teachers who worked overtime (without overtime pay) to make this possible.

A victory like this deserves their names being highlighted and not just the school that they represented. We look forward to see the names plastered when it's negative news. Let's get into plastering the names for positive accomplishments, just the same.

Congratulations to all who participated and those who contributed in any form to make this event possible and successful.
