ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Elmore Stoutt High School annual Spring Concert was a dedication to Arthur Selwood, a teacher that spent over two decades at the Elmore Stoutt High School teaching music, which was held last evening May 12, 2012 at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall.

Mr. Selwood, who is also head of the disciplinary department, looked pleased with the performances of some 200 students from the Music Department.

Several ensembles including the Junior Steel Band, Junior Concert Band, Senior Concert Band, Jazz Band, Choir and Senior Steel Band.

Furthermore, eight former male choir members proved that acapella is still powerful with two Boyz II Men hits “Water Runs Dry” and “Mama”.

Sharing the spotlight was the 2012 alumni ensemble, which comprised of Mr. Selwood’s former students from 1982 to 2011. Over 60 past students including Hon. Andrew Fahie, Alan Wheatley, Dr. Allison Archer and Kamau Georges gave a riveting performance of James Bonds’ theme songs including “Live and Let Die” and “Gold Finger”. They received a standing ovation.

Then the man of the moment looking “cool as a cucumber” took the stage where he was presented with a trombone from Andre Braithwaite, the school’s band director.

And of course Mr. Selwood could not resist sampling the instrument much to the appreciation of the audience that included Premier Dr. D. Orlando Smith; Deputy Premier Dr. Kedrick Pickering; Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron Walwyn and Fifth District Representative Hon. Dolores Christopher.

In one of the tributes, Ronnie Crawford, steel pan director, stated that Mr. Selwood was a man of dignity, discipline and respect, who is retiring at the end of July, 2012.

“He was a man who never allowed his students to settle for less,” Mr. Crawford added.

Meanwhile, the man of the hour acknowledged that music is crucial in the life of many, and wrapped up the evening with the vote of thanks, while Rochelle Smith kept the ball rolling as the Chairperson.

Dynamic, dedicated, compassionate, industrious and without a doubt, well disciplined, are just a few words put together that help to describe Mr. Selwood. If those in power follow the advice of the wise and the far-sighted, an institution should have more backbone and avoid more pitfalls. Mr. Selwood, your impacted will echo.
