ESHS boasts Territory's top student again! [Photoslide Included]
The long awaited moment of the reading and distribution of results was really something to see yesterday June 18, 2012 at the school grounds, where teachers, students, parents, friends, and family all gathered to see who got what grade, who will and who won’t graduate.
Among the outstanding results for ESHS, Klaudius Maynard was named the top student of the Virgin Islands. Maynard is also the Valedictorian of ESHS with Jason Williams Jr., third in the territory, being the salutatorian.
“I was proud of ESHS Kia Barry being number one in the territory in 2011 and it’s an honour to receive number one again,” said Principal Melissa Amey.
In addressing the fifth form students, Ms. Amey announced that of the 206 students, 198 were able to pass the secondary school leaving examination, which represented a 96 percent pass rate. She added that 8 students were unsuccessful and did not meet the requirements for graduation.
Out of the 198, 71 students did well enough to be granted on the Honour Roll, 43 students scored between 6.0 – 6.99 for honour roll and 28 students scoring 7.0 – 9.00 making them eligible for the high honours.
She boasted that the Elmore Stoutt High School secured 12 of the top 20 students in the Virgin Islands. Of that 12 there are 5 boys and 7 girls.
Ms. Amey added that with two boys being valedictorian and salutatorian of ESHS, it is a joy to witness because it hasn’t happened in the last 20 years.
Upon receiving their grades, it was a concrete jungle as students rushed with fright in hope that they were none of the eight that were not eligible to graduate and to make sure they secured a spot on the honour roll.
Speaking to some of the students of the high school, they all shared the same sentiments, stating that now the suspense is over and they see that their hard work has paid off, it feels good.
Chara Edwards and Shamira Langford, both with passing grades above 6.0 making them eligible to be on the Honour roll, expressed their love and faith to God and how he helped them and brought them through it all.
One student added that she can finally rest in peace.
261 overall passes
Out of the 273 students that wrote the secondary school leaving examination this year, 261 are successful and according to Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron Walwyn he looks forward to the implementation of a territorial examination aboard, as one of the areas in the education system is to continue to foster excellence.
In offering congratulations to the students yesterday June 18, 2012, the education minister added that he also looks forward "to having added academic support for our students and improved training for our teachers" to assist not just in the number of students that pass these exams, "but the competencies of our students and their desire to achieve with excellence".
The students, who sat this year’s examination came from both public and private schools in the Territory, namely the Elmore Stoutt High School, Bregado Flax Educational Centre, Seventh Day Adventist Secondary, St. Georges Secondary and the Claudia Creque Learning Centre.
One hundred and ninety eight ESHS students sat the exam with 74 obtaining grade 1 certificates; 28 grade 2; 96 grade 3 and 8 were unsuccessful. At the Bregado Flax Educational Centre on Virgin Gorda, 29 students sat the exams of which 24 students recorded passes with grade 1 certificates; 3 with grade 2 certificates; and 2 were unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, at the Claudia Creque Learning Centre on Anegada, all four students who took the examination recorded grade one passes.
Nineteen students took the exams at the Seventh Day Adventist High School, with 17 earning grade 1 passes; one pass with a grade 2 certificate and one unsuccessful while at the St. Georges Secondary School, 16 students sat the examination with 8 passes with grade 1 certificates; 5 passes with grade 2 certificates; 2 passes with grade 3 certificates and 1 unsuccessful student.
Minister Walwyn further disclosed that throughout the Territory, there were a total of 74 students that qualified to take supplementary exams. Of those students, 67 were successful while five did not qualify to take any supplemental
exams.
Five boys in Top 10
The education Minister also congratulated the Territory’s stop student, Klaudius Maynard of Elmore Stoutt High School. Second in the Territory was Nema Henry of the Seventh Day Adventist High School, both respectively earning the two highest grade point averages within the secondary schools.
He also offered congratulations to five young men in the public school who attained a spot on the Territory’s top 10 students list; Claudius Maynard, Maynard, Jason Williams Jr., J’Verne Findlay, Devern Robin, and Ricky Singh.
In a message to all students, the minister said, “in a few short weeks you will officially turn your tassels and usher in your young adult lives. I encourage you to responsibly enjoy all of your celebrations with family members and friends. I look forward to participating in many of your graduation exercises and having the opportunity to personally congratulate you on your success thus far.”
He also encouraged the students to consider attending the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College to further their education.
As for those who plan to seek employment immediately, his advice to them is, “put your best foot forward when exploring work opportunities. Studies have shown that the quicker a young person is employed, the experience gained while on the job, will go a long way in helping you retain employment for long periods as well as give you the necessary experience for advancement on the job and even better employment opportunities. So getting a job, keeping that job, and becoming a valuable assist to your organisation will go a long way as you chart your path for career advancement.”
In 2011 the Territory achieved an overall 98.5% pass rate, which is the highest overall graduation success rate at the secondary level in the Territory for the last 10 years.
This had sparked criticism at the time for then Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Andrew Fahie. Under the current education Minister Walwyn, a committee was formed to review the secondary school assessment and among the findings of their report which was laid in the House of Assembly on February 29, 2012, is that supplementary assessment must be reviewed and determination made if it is beneficial to continue that practice.
The 2010 success rate was 91.1% and in 2009 was 93.3%.
