ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - After over 14 years in which she served in the office as both Deputy Chief Registrar [2000-2008] and as Chief Registrar of the Courts [2008-2014] Jamaican national Paula M. Ajarie is no longer at that office.

According to this news site's sources within the Legal and Judicial system the Chief Registrar of Lands Mrs. Eric Smith-Penn is expected to replace her in the coming months.

Mrs. Smith-Penn has already been named the Acting Chief Registrar of High Court and her substantive post of Chief Registrar of Lands is being advertised.

The same source confirmed that Mrs. Smith-Penn has expressed an interest in the post and has allegedly gained the backing of senior officers in the Deputy Governor’s Office, that is, the Deputy Governor V. Inez Archibald and Permanent Secretary David D. Archer.

The Deputy Governor’s Office is responsible for the Virgin Islands Legal and Judicial System.

Former Registrar Ms. Ajarie’s contract was not renewed and she left office at the end of March of this year.

She is still in the Virgin Islands having been granted a work permit and is employed in private practice at a new law firm Habour Chambers located in Road Town and owned by David A. Abednego who is the Financial Services Commission’s Director of Insolvency Services.

It is unclear when Mrs. Smith-Penn will be confirmed to the post and why she has agreed to take the post which is simply a lateral move for her. Calls to her office revealed that she was not available and out dealing with High Court matters.

The Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court is a government job with a grade at level 17 with a salary range of $62,900-$92,150.00.

After all, time for Ms Ajaree to move on. How could she survive in one job for so long.
Alas a BVIslander has been appointed. Thank god for that.

Do you know what "alas" means? Just checking. Based on your last sentence I do not think that you meant to use the word "alas".

I think "After all" meant "At last: rather than "alas" but I am not sure that he/she knows the difference.
Don't be fooled by the appointment of Ms. Smith Penn - she is not a token BVIslander appointee, she is extremely competent and has already demonstrated he worth when acting as the Registrar. If only all BVIslanders were as competent as she is!!!

You are correct silk. Alas means by bad luck, expresses sorrow, pity or apprehension of evil. So how" After all" used it means she is thanking God for putting in an evil person. Before people use words they should look them up and understand the meaning.

Private sector is not magically empowered to grant sinecures to those who enjoyed the same whilst formerly employed in public sector.

In my opinion, Eric or Bejiman should have been done 2 years ago when they renewed her contract it was obvious that a local could do the job...Kudos to you Mr. Abednego for starting your own law firm

I am glad for Mrs Penn-Smith. Now this act of goodness has been done to her she should remember the phrase " Do unto others ( be fair, show goodness, have mercy, weight things with equal balances) as you have them do unto you"
