Emphatic wins for One Love & VG United in BVIFA National League
Rebels defeat Islanders 2-0
The latest round of matches got underway on Saturday, February 4, 2023, with Rebels FC beating Islanders FC 2-0, with goals from Kelvin Glasgow and Jalen Prentice.
“I am very pleased with the performance of the Rebels team,” commented Coach Latoya Sue.
“They showed awesome teamwork and chemistry. They stuck to the plan and kept it simple, were able to up the tempo of the game when they needed to and slow it down when they had to. It was a game everyone was anticipating and I am happy for the victory and I really appreciate the dedication of the Rebels players,” Sue added.
One Love thrash Old Madrid 8-0
On Sunday, February 5, 2023, One Love United smashed home eight goals in a rout of Old Madrid FC as Mark Savage’s side continued to mount a serious attempt to lift their first National League championship since 2018.
“A great game! Great football being played, and we hardly skipped a beat,” commented Savage.
“It seems like the team really wants to lift the trophy this year, but we will have to be at our best next weekend when we face VG United on their home turf,” Savage added.
Shayne Prince opened the scoring in just the 5th minute, on his way to a first-half hat trick that made his season total a league-leading 14, whilst Collin Lavia scored his 12th of the season. Richard Morgan added a solo strike and Jermaine May netted a brace while Shavaughn Williams rounded out the scoring.
VG United whipped Positive 5-1
Also on Sunday, Sheldon Tony netted a hat trick in VG United’s 5-1 victory against Positive FC.
“It was a good team performance in the end,” noted Manager Jermain Abrams.
“It took us until around the 70th minute to finally finish the game off and we were very wasteful in the first half especially. In the second half, we changed things up a bit and managed to gain some dominance in possession. The win keeps us in touch with the top four and anything can happen during the rest of the season.”
After Tony’s opener in the 12th minute, Positive FC equalised through Dwayne Smith in the 29th minute before Tony scored his second in the 39th to make it 2-1. Positive then pushed their opponents all the way, until Joel Mars scored in the 84th, Tony completed his hat trick in the 2nd minute of added time and Deventa Samuel made it 5-1 in the 4th minute of added time right at the death.
Sugar Boys edge Panthers 2-1
Over on Virgin Gorda, the Sugar Boys FC may have lost top spot on goal difference to One Love, but they managed to get all three points against Panthers FC in what was a tricky 2-1 win, with a vociferous home town support.
All the goals came in the first half with Derol Redhead putting the Boys ahead from the penalty spot in the 20th minute, before Oswort Holder made it 2-0 in the 26th minute, but Kerry Christmas pulled one back before the break to give Panthers a foothold in the game, but one they couldn’t capitalise on.
“It was a very important win for us with One Love putting on the pressure,” stated Redhead.
“The guys know the situation and all the guys came out and gave 100 percent effort. We have no choice but to be at our best in every game now if we want to retain our title, but I believe that if we stay focused and keep our momentum going we will do it,” Redhead added.
