ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI— The BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) is advising the public that the Emergency Room at Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital is currently experiencing a surge in patient volume.

As a result, wait times may be longer than usual.

"Our medical team is working diligently to ensure all patients are assessed and treated as quickly and safely as possible. Please note that patients with life-threatening or urgent conditions will be prioritised," BVIHSA stated in a press release this afternoon, Wednesday, November 19, 2025.

Members of the public with non-emergency concerns are encouraged to seek care at the Road Town Clinic located in the Major Peebles Wing.

"We appreciate your patience and understanding during this period," BVIHSA stated.

Well, the bombacou rates in the bvi have substantially increased. Most of the rates are due to the fact VI men are drinking copious amounts of rum, jissom and getting foods high in lard. Men cut down the intake so the hospital can free up doctors for the sick.

Lets examine some factors that can lead to long waiting time in the ER.
    1. Abnormal increase in number of patients seeking care.
    2. Reduced number of doctors and other medical staff available to offer care.
    3. Increased number of multi trauma cases requiring more intensive and specialized medical care.

How does adequate staffing of your ER and support services affect all of the scenarios above.

Stop playing cheap and treat your staff and patients more better, the medical system over here in this country is getting out of hand now mon. I understand where their coming from with priorities for people with urgent medical matter but really and truly the system need to stop sky-lacking and be more on point. It done bad enough the government can't even afford proper mechanics 2ith high IQ to keep the ambulance them in checks with service. Every now and again you only seeing one ambulance ???? in operation while the rest of them are broken down. And this is why some people will go to a better and organize clinic to check up on instead of waiting and wasting an entire day in a hospital for no reason. You go in there from 9am sharp, and aint coming back out till 8:30pm in the night.

'surge' in patient volume....why are you saying this is bad management by Ms. Samuels for people getting sick or injured....so unfair....need to ask why there was a surge....people living at the hospital is because of politicians not Ms Samuel.

It's concerning to hear about the surge in patient volume at Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital leading to increased wait times in the Emergency Room. This emphasizes the importance of efficient healthcare systems. Are there initiatives in place to address this issue and improve patient care?

Exactly! People have been going to emergency room and having to be neglected or discharged not having been evaluated properly. If there is a surged, what is the issues that are causing this? Is it personal crises or an outbreak of something contagious? If HSA is going to complain about the sudden surge they need to find the source and inform the public.

The same thing has happened in the UK and all of Europe because of the massive influx of migrants, the BVI is losing its own culture and becoming a Spanish colony. Schools, hospitals housing are all being effected to the detriment of the local people.

I think they have enough doctors there, have some diverted to the ER when it's full.

Only Qualified Physicians(not General Practitioners), and Registered Nurses(not Nursing trainees) are allowed to work in the E.R. All others will be working on the Med-Surge ward

They need to address the problem the s.ntos and others going there for free medical care for every little stupidness. Some of them go tooth aches and all kind of nonsense. Address the problem you all can turn back your own people when there is no room or rush them out of the hospital care but you can't tell these people go to private or public clinics for non emergency illnesses. The system full of sh.t.

Here is a news flash. The VI population has increased five fold, so there will be an increase in emergency visits. Additionally, many of VI residents may not be able to afford healthcare and may be using the emergency room for primary care. What sector/gen is showing up at the emergency room, ie, boomers, Gen X, millennials, Gen Z, etc. A forward thinking BVIHSA anticipating and seeing the population surging would have built surge capacity into the system operation. Further, there should be a primary focus on preventative car, doing so will cut medical cost, improve health, reduce strain on emergency room. Healthcare is inherently dear ( expensive), some providers focus is on making as much money as they can , exploiting the system. Is this consistent with the Hippocratic Oath, ie, doing the patient no harm. Healthcare is the # 1 priority in the territory with every resident needing and using at some point. Consequently, collectively funded to deliver at least the minimum level of care.

Been hearing of a lot of folks being sick, with various things that sound flu-like.
Maybe that’s the reason for the surge in the ER.
The ER nurse are the best. If they need support, give it too them!

They need to learn to pick up the pace when there’s an influx. Far too lackadaisy and it’s going to cost someone their life. For whatever reason they can’t seem to access faster than a turtle pace and move on to the next quickly. Shouldn’t matter if some who come in can’t seem to comprehend that the ER is intended for emergencies. However, shame on those who use the ER as a Dr office and not its intended purpose. ER staff needs to adjust their pace regardless!

The simple fact is that there is very little staff to offer care.
There is not enough doctors and paramedical staff take care of the patients.
Hence the long waiting time. Did SHE present nay figures. No. It is just a cheeky cover up for poor management and poor treatment of staff. All the good staff are leaving because they are tired on the impoverish management and the poor treatment of staff. You need to get rid of the top management and the HR staff and start afresh even though the reputation is already awash in the medical community out there.

People without affordable access to primary care often delay care for easily treated issues if caught early until they become critical enough to require treatment at the ER. There is also the issue of an increased population, and limited outreach to address issues such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Plus, the medical wages on offer and high cost of living here discourage many health professionals to come work here.

It’s concerning but understandable that the emergency room is under pressure right now — longer wait times during a patient surge are to be expected. I appreciate that they’re prioritizing urgent cases and encouraging non-emergency patients to seek care elsewhere. Hopefully they can scale up capacity or secure additional resources soon.

Firstly. Get rid of the Director, Chief of Staff, Chief Operating Officer, Human Resource Manager, and Chief Nursing Officer. And you will see better results at the Hospital.
