PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI – When hair stylists and beauticians from fourteen salons took the stage at Pargon’s Night club on December 8, 2013, it was no doubt that the audience had their favourites which was evident from their boisterousness.

And while on the night in question, Eclipse Hair Salon and Spa/Barber Shop walked away with the overall winning prize, the organizer were left with the task of determining who was going to claim the People’s Choice Award.

That decision was recently made, and Elite Braiding and Nail Shop was announced the winner. A simple presentation was held today January 15, 2014 at the winner’s location in Paraquita Bay. Owner of the Salon, Mrs. Felicia A. Tonge-Fenton was most elated in accepting her prizes from two of the show’s organizers, Mr. Aymen Husein and Ms. Latoya Cotten.

Mrs. Tonge-Fenton said that her beauty shop had participated in the best braiding and weaving and most outrageous styles. “I was aiming to win all three categories but was more determined to win the most outrageous category prize.”

She further stated that the announcement of her winning the hearts of the audience was one that took her by surprise as on the night of the show she was more locked onto capturing the points from the judges.

“But I think I got the best award ever as it came from the people and that means a lot to me. The people are the ones that matters more in my line of business so it is an honour to know I am being awarded at the choice the people,” said Mrs. Tonge-Fenton.

She expressed heartfelt gratitude to God for giving her such talent but also was grateful to several others, “My husband John Fenton who is my number one supporter, my parents, siblings, clients and random supporters. I cannot forget my closest friend and supporter Ms. Lauren Liburd. Also I would like to thank Mr. Aymen and his team for putting on such a great show.”

Mr. Husein told Virgin Islands News Online that preparations are already well on the way for the staging of the next show. He said that registrations will soon commence and will be announced on their website www.facebook/stylebvi. “We want persons to keep locked in on the site which will be constantly updated as we progress towards the next show. At this stage we are working on sponsorship both locally and internationally.”

He noted that the Style BVI Hair & Beauty Expo is a one-day hair celebration where fans; customers; and hair, fashion and make up enthusiasts come together in one room and on one stage to see some of the hair salon industry’s hottest talents showcase their hairstyles.

Mr. Husein is very optimistic that the show is going to be a notch up this year.

Why are so many Black women wearing someone else's hair? I find this appalling and I cringe every time I see them. You have made the China man very wealthy and I saw an interview where the Chinese man said they will not allow Blacks to be in the big business of distributing hair like they do, we can only buy it from them. Black women can do so many beautiful styles with their own hair but seemed to have gotten lazy with combing it and curling it daily. I see women who haven't combed or washed their hair in 2 weeks to a month, just to keep someone else's hair on their heads. God forbid you wet their hair from the rain or at the beach. I see so many Black women who go to the beach only to go in up to their waist because of the hair thing. My Question is 'WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO START SHOWING OFF YOUR OWN HAIR"? Are you ashamed of what you got. DON'T WANT TO HEAR YOU HAVE NO TIME TO DO IT BEFORE WORK BECAUSE I ALWAYS GOT UP 1/2 HOUR EARLY TO DO MINE. Just curious to see the answers because I know I am going to hear a mountain of excuses....Here we go.........

Honestly speaking, you are incorrect with a few of your arguments. Yes, I do understand that you are entitled to your own opinion, but you cannot judge and categorize everyone. If someone wishes to wear extension, well, so be it. It is their money that they are spending, why care? They can do whatever their mind and heart's desire. If you do not like their extensions well then you do not buy it. We all have choices in life, we were not created and made the same because if we were then this world would be wonderful... For instance, do you dress and eat the same thing everyday? I don't think you do. I DO NOT have extensions in my hair and when I attend the beach I do not allow the water to touch my hair. I strongly believe someone's hair is not your business. Why not mind your own business. On this little island you all worry too much about the other person's life that you all lose focus on what is important to you. Have it ever crossed your mind that they may implement extensions in their hair because they needed a protective style, they may be ill with a disease or sh*** its their life they do as they want...

@ great answer.. did you sat God bless you? Well God blessed you with your hair, not someone else's. I can see if people had an illness or scalp condition, then a wig or hair piece would be fine, but this entire island seems to have a scalp condition ( sarcasm). God sees that you don't like what he gave you and there is NO BLESSING in that, so before you bring GOD in it, think about it.

I agree with you 100%….. These women have no idea who told the first black woman her hair was too nappy, or too dark or too difficult to deal with. Who told the first black woman her skin wasnt pretty without make-up? Who told the first black woman her nose and lips are too big? WHO TAUGHT THEM THIS??? Yall need to go read a book and develop your roots in your SOUL before u rip out the roots in ur head for that temporary cover up beauty, look inside urselves. Too many people are fooled by tv and media as to what beauty is…. People around here talking about knowing who they are, but are living up to a FAKE model of beauty that was developed to capitalize on the insecurities of mostly WOMEN. ANY man or woman who studies their past and learn how IMPORTANT accepting their natural beauty is, they will put that crap down. You dont think these arabs and other nationalities know the weakness of the black culture? To buy and consume everything even if it serves no purpose from any and everybody no matter who what where when….Only a black man or woman would bargain with someone outside their race and not support their own…. But black people hate who they are (Africans) and love who they can't be (Everybody else)…. I challenge someone to go out there and get the statistics on how many blacks go out there and spend their money outside their race to build the other nationalities' houses, buy their cars and estates back where they are REALLY from. But if local black people here would develop the small man on the corner or the food vendor down the street then we would be singing a different song. Everything that black people have from what they wear (owned by another race) the music artists they listen to (all labels owned by the same people that own the prisons but again another race), their religion (given to them by a group of people from another race who knew nothing about them). You begin to see the gullability of the black man…..We are non-discriminate to everyone else but ourselves and we dont get that love BACK!!!!! You dont see a black man in a hall of fame for any other race….but you gon find Bill Clinton in the Black Hall of Fame….. Yall can laugh at me and jew me if you want to but let the truth be told…..

To Question ! Why dont just congratulate the young lady than to come on here asking bu.... about why Black women dont wear their own hair. If u wear your own well so be it stop hating on others......................

I see nothing to congratulate. I stand by what I said and you men know you cannot even run your fingers through their hair, or suffer some serious blows. Don't hate me because I am showing you all the magnitude of money that is spent on hair that is not even your own. The distributors know how much some of us hate ourselves and they feed on it and we fall for it hook line and sinker. Since you are going to buy it anyway, if you were a distributor, do you know the amount of money you can keep in your own communities and your pockets? This is not hating but a very serious business opportunity for many. I am waiting for some business oriented people to come forward with their input. This could work.

I was not surprised by your answers. Here is another. Why then won't some of you become major distributors here in the Caribbean to become rich like the China Man? You are all making them rich and oh yeah, they won't let you in. You still have to buy it from them. Just a test to see if any of you take this challenge and succeed. I myself would not peddle that crap to my poor Black family and friends. We are so brain washed that you are actually attacking me for bringing up the subject....WOW!

Is hair the only thing we buy from the china man? Is the China man the only person sellibg hair? Do you feel you are jumping to conclusions ascto why people wear weave, braids? Did you read your other post? Post 1, you crcify us for wearing. Post 2 and 3 you want us to be rich by selling the same hair you dissing to the same women you questioning. I think you questioning it because a weave/braid wearing tek yuh man. How you know what they can run their hair through. Men love that stuff becausevthey pay for it. So to all the BVI Ladies...if you cant achieve it weave and if you cant grow it sew it. Felecia no matter where you move too you still a ghut girl and you large. Congratulations, you are young and new to the business and is doing well.

Ha! Ha! Cheers to that my dear "tis a lady with weave who stole her cock-a-doodle-do." That individual *question* is an idiot!!! What do you mean by I see nothing to congratulate. I cannot see why on God's earth she is so angry about WEAVE lol. You can clearly see through her words that she is unhappy with herself and most of all jealous. You see jealousy is simply and clearly the fear that you do not have value. Jealousy scans for evidence to prove the point that others will be preferred and rewarded more than you. There is only one alternative self-value. If you cannot love yourself, you will not believe that you are loved. You will always think it's a mistake or luck. Take your eyes off others and turn the scanner within. Find the seeds of your jealousy, clear the old voices and experiences. Put all the energy into building your personal and emotional security. Then you will be the one others envy, and you can remember the pain and reach out to them (Jennifer James).
