FAT HOGS BAY, Tortola, VI– Virgin Islands (VI) Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) said as the current 2023 elections season heats up, is it becoming increasingly difficult for him to 'keep his voice.'

Dr Wheatley was at the time speaking as a telephone guest on the Thursday, March 30, 2023, edition of ‘Da Morning Braff’ radio show on Tola Radio 100.5 FM with host Floyd Burnett aka ‘Heritage’.

'We got to push on' - Dr Wheatley

“I'm struggling to keep my voice, but we got to push on because of course, we have an important election, and we have to let persons know why they should choose us versus anybody else. So it's a labor of love,” he added.

The Premier said, however, the decision is ultimately up to the people of the VI to vote for who they want in office.

“I don't believe in any tricks or anything like that. You know, I believe you go out there, you tell people why they should vote for you [and] you defend your record [and] give your ideas,” he said.

He added that if someone says something that is incorrect, he will still correct them as that is all part of the campaign process. To the voters, however, he asked that they listen to persons on the campaign trail with a clear & critical mind.

Challenge political candidates - Premier urges electorate

“Just listen with a sober-minded mentality, with a critical ear... and put two and two together,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Premier added that when persons on the campaign trail say things that don't make sense, the electorate should also see the need to challenge them on their worlds ahead of the General Election date set for April 24, 2023,

“And if you can't stand up to the challenge and you can’t stand up to the scrutiny, you're not ready,” he said in a message to his political opponents.

The campaign is approaching the finish line so there is no rest for weary. It is time to reach back in the tank for that last burst of energy. Time to go all out, for there is no tomorrow. Campaigners have to leave it all on the field. Moreover, to be human is to be political. We are political animal. Aristotle defined humans as Zoa Politika, ie, political animals. The animating force of politics is CONFLICT. If there were no disagreements there won’t be any need for politics. The Greek word for politics is polis or Greek city-state. The polis (HoA)is the place where political animals interact and work cooperatively to make laws, build institutions on which social order and justice hinges. Moreover, from Ancient Times, politics has been divisive, combative, dirty, negative, deceitful, yet, politicians must navigate living in the mine field of the good , the bad and the ugly. However, responding to misinformation, disinformation, malinformation, lies, etc is not negative campaigning and cannot go unresponded to. That is being swiftboated.

I want to wish my Hon. Premier a speedy recovery with his voice. However, I want him to know that he should not be fearful of victory because God is with him. Que Dios te Bendiga. Que la bendicion sobre ti. I will not split my vote with no other party especially N.D.P. I will vote for V.I.P all the way. Even they offer me money I will not change my mind. I am waiting for them to ask me for one of my votes and I will chase them.

Mr Wheatley you dont have to shout to get the honest messages across the island..if i recalled my mom and grandmother always said, a lying tongue has no memory. If you got to scream on the mic...tell the mc controller to turn it up.

what we need to know and see what have you done for the 4yrs in office for the district and the community, because people need to know.
