ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Controversy has hit the 2025 Calypso Monarch Competition, resulting in disqualifications and a new monarch crowned.

According to the  Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee (VIFFC), it has determined that following an investigation of songs used during the 2025 Calypso Competition at Charlie Neil Frett Festiville on July 26, 2025, four breaches of the rules were found and must result in disqualifications and the reassignment of placements, prizes and titles.

Calypsonians disqualified

Three calypsonians were disqualified for breaching a rule that states, “The Calypso must be your own composition and should not have been presented in any form prior to the competition.”

Those disqualified in part or in full from the 2025 Calypso Competition include the Calypso Monarch, Mr Eklund Z. Adams, who performs under the stage name Officer.

Mr Adams, according to the VIF&FC, will be disqualified for use of the song Victims Crying Out. He will additionally be disqualified for use of the song Set Good Examples.

Joycelyn Searles Duncan, who performs under the stage name Sistah Joyce, will be disqualified for use of the song Ms P. Sistah Joyce had placed First Runner Up.

Meanwhile, Lester Fontelio- with stage name: Le Le- will be disqualified for use of the song Hall of Shame.

The Committee said it has found that all competitors entered the competition using titles and/or songs which were previously used in previous competitions in or outside of The Virgin Islands or were presented in a performance capacity not associated with the 2025 Calypso Competition.

The Committee further determined that the songs are the own composition of the competitors and while words were change to suit the competitions, the Committee has determined that entering a song into a previous competition or performing a song for another purpose other than the 2025 Calypso Competition and repackaging it for the purpose of the 2025 Calypso Competition, despite the introduction of new words, still constitutes a breach of the said rule.

New Monarch crowned

The new 2025 Calypso Monarch is Marcus Mark, who sang under the stage name: Young Blood. Mr  Mark will receive $6,000, a trophy, a sash and a crown.

It also means that Mark has retained the crown, having won it in 2024.

The 2025 Calypso Monarch First Runner-Up is Reynold Phillips aka King Paido, who will receive $3,000, a trophy and a sash.

The 2025 Calypso Monarch Second Runner-Up is Jaynene Jno Lewis, whose stage name is Miss Understood. She will receive $2,000, a trophy and a sash.

Meanwhile, the award for Best Lyrics will be re-awarded to Young Blood, who will also receive a trophy, a sash and a $100 cash prize.

The Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee said it does not believe that competitor Eklund Z. Adams, Joycelyn Searles Duncan and Lester Fontelio sought to deceive the VIFFC or Calypso Sub-committee, but interpreted the rules incorrectly, resulting in the breach.

It also said the offences committed in 2025 shall not affect the participation of the competitors in the upcoming year, 2026.

This poppy show of a Festival makes me sick to the stomach. 13 year olds roaming through the village drinking and lighting up joints, young girls walking around dress like little sluts on the stroll, x rated performance on stage with these low level dirty disgusting females that was probably smelling fro the lack of water and proper hygiene. That band show be ashamed of themselves. Festival is F up this year and have gotten worse. An apology should be issued to the people that spend their money to come here from outside.

Each band artist, and Calypsonians must have 2 recordemos sones in order to perform in our Village, one of which Calyosonians must perdormed at the final calypao show. Time to raise the standard and seriousness. We want to hear them before that night on state, have an idea of what they sound like..

      1. A set of ghetto-looking, ratchet, skank-looking females advertizing their privates thinking they look good when they look like trash and don’t realize a lot of the males look at that is someone to screw not a long term commitment. Look like video- (can’t say the rest of the word)

      2. From the night of the Torch light parade, after entering the village, the weed was stink behind various booths (stink smell comes to the front)

      3. Police officers are doing NOTHING about all the weed smoking that hits you as you pass by certain booths.

      4. VI Festival and Fairs Committee, this is NOT BVI CULTURE…it’s an overrated music fest with most artists promoting vulgarity and promiscuity.

For the IGNORANT FEW WHO SEE IT AS COMPLAINING TRY GET SOME COMMON SENSE AND MORALS/VALUES FROM TALKING OUT OF BOTH SIDES OF YOUR MOUTH!!!

Can’t be calling God’s name in your mouth then praising DEVIL WORK!!!!!!!

A vincy won and they couldn’t deal with that. No one is entitled. Also why wasn’t a preliminary show held before the final show? What a waste

Nonsense. Paido won multiple crowns many of which were well received by the public. So, what are you trying to get at?
And what is really the value in keeping a preliminary show with just 6 participants.

Drama Festival 2025. So glad I decided to keep my behind home. The only thing I may patronize is the Food Fair. Anything else, NO. Just want this mess they call Festival to be over with. You got teenagers in the village rolling up joints and drinking. What booths in the village is selling drinks to minors for a quick profit who adults in the village is buying liquor for minors?

From the performances I saw that night; I was shocked when the reigning king didn't win again. Officer songs were good but not relatable to the festival in any way. Joyce seems like she live to complain and should have been disqualified when she returned to the stage to curse the premier and the people. Then she knew she was wrong and faked a sick when the results came out. kudos to Young Blood - that crown was yours from the beginning!

It is impossible to get blood out of a stone! The entire BVI Festival & Fairs Committee need to be dismantled. Year after year there’s great disappointment at the different shows. Considering the drama at last year’s Miss BVI and now this year’s calypso show, one can clearly assume that the Chairpersons don’t know what they’re doing. I’m afraid that things will not get any better until they stop appointing their friends and cronies to run these committees.
