ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – It was on February 18, 2025, that our News Centre first and accurately reported that the Ministry of Education had purchased four school buses to provide safe and reliable transportation for students in the Road Town area. The buses have since been commissioned.

Education Minister Honourable Sharie B. de Castro (AL) explained that this initiative arose from a challenge that created an opportunity to purchase these buses, ultimately benefiting the students.

Sources indicate that the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs, and Sports acquired the four school buses in late 2024 to assist students displaced by the demolition of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School.

More than just a mode of transportation

Minister de Castro noted, “Students in the Road Town area needed to be transported to both the Enis Adams Primary School and the Francis Lettsome Primary School. These buses serve as a vital access tool to ensure they can get to school.”

She emphasised that the buses do more than just transport students; they also support experiential learning.

“This initiative represents a significant shift towards active learning, allowing students to step outside the classroom and engage with real-world experiences. I want to celebrate the success of having these school buses,” she added at the commissioning ceremony on June 6, 2025.

Minister de Castro stressed the importance of active learning, saying, “Learning should not be stationary; it should be dynamic. Students need to be able to move, think critically, and solve problems, which often arise beyond the four walls of a classroom. I commend the ministry for advancing this initiative. It is a financially prudent decision that enhances access to education for all schools.”

Transportation initiative to be expanded?

She also expressed her gratitude to the bus drivers who have joined the ministry and are doing an excellent job transporting students.

The minister thanked parents and the community for their trust in the ministry regarding this initiative and hinted at plans to expand the programme for the benefit of the children of the Virgin Islands.

Meanwhile, Virgin Islands Chief Education Officer Orlandette R. Crabbe shared that the idea for transportation stemmed from a pressing need to provide affordable and reliable transportation for students.

She stated, “We are pleased to officially launch these buses, confirming safe and secure transportation to and from school, as well as for excursions and field trips for our students.”

I see all these buses sitting in a car park near the eternally under repair CAB. School's out for the summer so do these new buses have other passengers during the summer? or will they just stay parked all summer?

@ Schools out. There are summer programs that students attend. They should be utilized for that too.

I hope the Government understand what they are doing. So will the drivers be permanent and pensionable? We have Teachers employed for so long and they aren't permanent and pensionable. Who will maintain these buses? As I see daily they go to East End and Meyers Estate. Who will maintain is the big question. Government in all sorts of business that they shouldn't be in. We depositing monies into a private bank unknowingly and now we have school buses, wow, we really heading backwards.

Doors open in to traffic - unless they are on both sides.

Very smart !! Doors on the wrong side so we are dropping our children in the traffic.

Doors open onto the road. This is dangerous for a school bus.

So you get new buses but the passengers still have to get in and out into oncoming traffic.
Someone with half a brain would have ordered buses that let people in and out on the sidewalk side.

@ WHAT!!!. They ordered buses from the States, I bet. In the States, they drive on the right, so children are let off on the sidewalk and not in the street. Here, we drive on the left, so children will be let off in the road, which is very dangerous. The steering wheel should be on the right side.

Buy busses to transport children with doors that open to traffic. Then post photos of it to celebrate and champion your achievements. Is there any wonder at this stage why we hold our government in such low regard?

You are not suppose to be dropping off children in the middle of the road, the bus drivers will pull off of the road into the school yards, where they will get off safe. Please stop discouraging the education team.
