ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - One of the many highlights of the BVI Football Association’s 2012 Awards Ceremony held on Saturday June 9, 2012, was the naming of Lavern Fahie as MVP of the recently concluded Women’s League.

As the envelope was opened and her name read out, “Ebony” leapt to her feet with a huge grin on her face and threaded her way to the podium to accept her prize from the BVIFA President Andy Bickerton. That grin got wider as Bickerton confirmed that not only would Fahie receive a Laptop Computer, but also the Football Association would be providing her with a scholarship.

The Ceremony, which was held at Prospect Reef Hotel, was attended by the Minister responsible for Sport, the Hon. Myron Walwyn, sponsors, representatives from all the Men’s and Women’s clubs that took part in the 2011/12 season, as well as, the coaches and referees.

Following the opening prayer delivered by BVIFA 1st Vice-President Aubrey Liburd, Bickerton addressed the audience highlighting the great strides made by the Association in a short time and how vastly improved the image of Football had become.

He expressed the importance of marketing and promotion of the game and how through positive promotion more and more sponsors would come onboard to help with the aims and ambitions of the Association.

Minister Walwyn was next to the podium and he reinforced how far the Association had come in restoring itself to the forefront of Sports in the Territory, but also warned that those efforts would go to waste if the impetus was not maintained.

He also reiterated his and the Government’s commitment to helping all sports reach higher levels of performance and organisation.

On behalf of sponsors Roadtown Wholesale, Andi Dobbi explained how through the brand Heineken, his company was looking to expand its market share and support Football.

He also re-presented the Islanders Football Club with the winner’s check for $1,000 from the 2012 Heineken Cup.

Johnny Hassan, for whom the women’s 2012 seven a side league was named, also spoke about the game that has brought him so much joy over the years and continues to do so as he watches the sport develops.

The Awards were then handed out including the individual Men’s and Women’s top scorers which went to Fahie with 12 and Henroy Mitchell with 29.
