EAST END, Tortola, VI - Motorists in the Virgin Islands (VI) are being told to traverse the Blackburn Highway in the vicinity of Alphonso‘s Gas Station in East End and Parham Town’s entrance with ‘extreme caution’ as the East End bridge has been discovered to be severely compromised.

This is according to information coming from subject Minister of Transportation, Works, and Utilities, Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) who noted that mobilization to remedy this bridge will include immediate demolition starting tomorrow, Sunday, March  6, 2022.

Alternative route to be used

He added that authorities will also be installing a temporary access road for traffic flow where motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes where possible.

“Effective immediately, heavy equipment is restricted from traversing this area!” Hon Rymer noted while adding that an alternate route will be demarcated during the construction phase.

District representative and Opposition Leader, Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8) in a Facebook post highlighting the issues said the Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has been contacted on the severity of the issue and the potential dangers it poses.

The BVI need to start requesting refunds from contractors who build Sh!#$T as such. How can you pave a bridge with steel so near to bottom of the concrete?

The entire 8th District road network is in a deplorable condition. This is what Marlon needs to stress at every HOA meeting. It is disgraceful.

That thing constructed about seven to ten years a go if my memory served me incorrectly. How come it is falling apart so soon? Poor engineering I assumed.

Why you all call a chunk of concrete a bridge. Time to get a bridging loan to pay (circa $99000) for an advisor to advise
on feasibility of constructing another chunk of concrete for a budget of about five million dollars

Unfortunately none of the Tortola's bridges, retaining walls, road surfaces and foundations were designed for the 24/7 high volume use by all the large heavy trucks, trailers, boats and equipment that constantly travel on these paved roads.
