POCKWOOD POND, Tortola, VI- Word reaching our newsroom is there has been a shake-up at the Government-run Department of Waste Management (DWM).

Word is that Acting Manager Neville R. Allen Sr, is out, as he has been sent into retirement.

Filling Mr Allen's spot as the new Head of Department is Trinidadian Marcus Solomon, who started his first day on the job Monday, July 17, 2023. Mr Solomon has been appointed Manager on a contract.

The public sector post was advertised and persons familiar with the selection process noted that Mr Solomon was the most qualified of all the applicants. It is unclear if any Virgin Islander applied or if there was anyone in the Department of Waste Management who could have moved up.

Big issues

The Department of Waste Management (DWM) has been rocked over the past 10 years with the issues of smoke emitting from the incinerator and landfill fires affecting the western side of Tortola and St John in the USVI. There have been numerous complaints for many years over this environmental health matter.

There is also the vexing issue of the incinerator with a broken scrubber for over 8 years and it’s unclear when that will be addressed. Despite the many promises, the problem has not been fixed.

Many of the DWM staff have also complained about their poor working conditions and the issue of adequate pay.

Meanwhile, efforts to reach Mr Solomon for comments provided futile up to the time of publication.

The DWM falls under the Ministry of Health and Social Development and the Minister is Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9), who only took office less than three months ago.

Allen is a good person that helps everyone. That Department has a lot of problems without much Staff, So this may be a good move to try to deal with the garbage problems in the Territory. Wish the new guy best of luck and hope Allen stays with the Department cause his experience, Knowledge, kind courtesy and patience in dealing with people is greatly needed in the Public Service.

I’m not not averse to bringing people from above Round Rock( above Round Rock term has a history) to work in the BVI..But are there no Virgin Islander/Belonger who are qualified for or interested in managing the solid waste department? If so the BVI people is “less” ( if anyone has to ask what this means, he/she is not familiar with the BVI) and is in poor shape shape.Has out school system let’s us down? Does it to be revamped urgently? Sold waste management is neither biochemistry, nuclear physics nor rocket science, is it? Was there no successive planning in DDM? If no, shame on it, and why not? What do know about this Solomon guy fro Trinidad? How closely we perused his background, if at all? We need to exercise due diligence, should we not? Will leave that there. Let the light shine. Furthermore, if we can pay people from above Round Rock big bucks, how the lil man in the civil service cannot get the lil increments. Department Heads/departments get off your ass and submit the damn paper work. Geez som bred mon!! How lazy, selfish or deliberate? Ministers/PSs you share in the blame too, for you should mske sure that department heads get off their lazy, incompetent asses and do their damn job. Some of these people need to be disciplined, should they not?

I thought we pass that stage, after all these years? We send so much people abroad to study and we still bringing people from down island to control things in our Government departments? We surely could do better. Other islands wont take BVI people and put them to run things so why we doing it? SHAME ON US!

Sucking the taxpayers money dry then going back after four years, that's all they here for. Most only talk while here. Check the track record in AG'S office.

Why can't we give persons a chance instead of bashing them. How many of our citizens work in other countries, would we like to know this is how they're being greeted. Give the man the support and let's fix the system..
