POCKWOOD POND, Tortola, VI- The Department of Waste Management is requesting quotations from property owners or their legal agents on Tortola to lease two acres of non-residential land for the sole purposes of storing and processing scrap metal and derelict vehicles for a period of 12 months.

According to the Government Information Service (GIS) today, November 1, 2024, the land shall ideally be flat and not sloping, accessible to heavy and light equipment, and slightly hidden from mobile traffic.

In early October, controversy erupted over Government leased land in Pockwood Pond on the western side of Tortola.

Landlord blocked access to leased land over nonpayment

According to information reaching our newsroom, the Ministry of Health and Social Development was leasing land from M. Ashley Ritter to store derelict vehicles, but that lease expired over a few months ago and had not been renewed.

With the Government occupying the land without payment, the landlord used a large excavator to block access to his property.

It is believed that because of the Commission of Inquiry Recommendations, the land lease had to be tendered while the landlord had to do without payment even while the derelict vehicles remained on his property.

It is unclear if that matter has been sorted out.

This headline made me laugh, the government see land, when they are the one selling land, but I guess it's just another way for the government to give away our taxpayers money to friends and family, they are so many land around and yet they are searching, but this is just a sham.

wish as a community we would drop this topic. lets use comps, currently its estimated $20 + million to complete the race track on St. Croix, so realistically we would would want our government to sink $25 million on another mix use entertainment complex as horse racing only would take a long time to recovery that initial investment. having an event we can dress up nice to quarterly is worth that amount? There is a newly renovated track in St. Thomas that both can accommodate local enthusiasts of the sport.

If they are not paying the owner of the land now, how can they pay a new land owner for dumping old vehicles? Why not pay the present owner, plus, who wants their land to be another dumping site to destroy the island more? This place is so backward that it is mind-boggling. I have land, but not for dumping at all.
