ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The new Government of the Virgin Islands (VI) will be sworn in this evening, April 25, 2023, according to a statement by the Party released today, April 25, 2023.

The party detailed that in accordance with section 52 of the VI Constitution, the government will comprise of elected VIP members and territorial At-Large member Ms Lorna G. Smith, OBE with documents already signed in the presence of Governor John J. Rankin CMG.

Further, the party extended thanks to the people of the VI for electing them once more, to lead the territory and added that it remains committed to fostering a government of inclusion, integrity accountability, and transparency.

Swearing-in Ceremony @ 6:30 PM

Confirmation of the swearing-in was also given by Government Information Services (GIS).

"Following the elections held in the Territory on Monday, April 24, 2023, the Governor has today received a letter from the elected members of the Virgin Islands Party, together with Mrs. Lorna Smith OBE, elected At Large Representative, that declares their support for the appointment of Dr. Natalio D. Wheatley as Premier of the Virgin Islands and for him to form the Government of the Virgin Islands in accordance with Section 52 of the VI Constitution Order, 2007.

"In accordance with Section 52 of the VI Constitution Order the Governor will swear in Dr. Natalio D. Wheatley as Premier, and his Ministers, this evening at 6.30 p.m. at Government House," GIS stated in a press release today.

'I will uphold my promises to you'- Lorna G. Smith

Meanwhile, Mrs Smith in a statement today thanked the electorate for the trust placed in her through their overwhelming support at the polls in the recent general elections.

“While on the campaign trail, I have consistently said that I am willing to work with whichever party the people of the BVI select, in the best interest of this territory. I remain grateful to the people for the faith they have placed in me and I will uphold my promises to you, now and throughout my tenure. The people have spoken: they want a coalition of persons to run the territory,” she added.

Ms Smith said the decision to form the government with the VIP came after several hours of conversation with the different parties concerned, including the National Democratic Party and the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM), and with telephone discussions with the VIP to arrive at a position to take the territory forward.

“Today I have decided that I will form a coalition with the VIP in order that a new Government be sworn in, and we start the process of moving this territory forward. As a public servant I have worked with various administrations in the best interest of the BVI,” she said.

Ms Smith detailed that as a member of the House of Assembly, her final arbiter in all matters will be the people of the Virgin Islands who elected her.

The VIP won 6 Districts. If PVIM and NDP would stop their bullsh** they could form a Government. 4 years as Opposition for being IDIOTS!!!! After all that happened with Head Coach, COI and the Territory against them and still win 6 seats, the other parties should be ashamed. Let them hold their corner without Lorna!

The country did spoke. They spoke very well as the elected 6 members of the VIP. NDP 1, 2, and 3 still was not successful in the scheme to come together to take the VIP out. Why? The majority in those parties wanted a seat at the table and wouldn't humble themselves to unify as they ALMOST had it. Greed and power is NDP downfall.

Lorna! Thanks for being part of this new government as your expertise and knowledge will assist in taking this BEAUTIFUL BVI to the next step.

Good for all the fools who split their votes. Everyone was chanting coalition Government, see what happens when you split? You get 3 parties that couldn't form a Government even though they had the majority. Everyone has VIP to kill but suppose VIP only had 4 seats? We would be without a government for days and Governor having to choose a Premier. The VIP went from being a frig like Daniel say, to the Savior of the BVI. Ronnie and them should be ashamed, they had 7 seats and one job, whole night bickering and now they upset with Lorna.

Were you in the room when they were negotiating? Were you on the other line listening to the conversation between all the parties? Pick sense out of non - sense, if there was a "unity" Government before why not now? It is obvious that VIP did not want Kyre and Sharie to be moved from their Ministry.

Also, the majority of the BVI wanted to see a coalition Government. That means one Ministry for each party leader. Kyre and Sharie could have been made Junior Ministers.

People need to remember being a Minister equals more money than a backbencher, Kyre and Sharie do not want to give that up to form no proper and fair coalition Government.

Your post is senseless because there was no government for VIP to negotiate if the 7 within PVIM, PU, & NDP could have found common ground in the best interest of the people, seeing they had the majority, but they could not do it. They would not do it. They refused to do it.

This is an absolute disgrace and the Governor should not allow it. The law reads that the majority must be of the same party. If Lorna is not willing to go full force into VIP then this government should not stand. She should not retain that she is NDP whilst joining this set. Apart from Kye and Sharie, the rest of the VIP elect got SLIM majorities in their districts. SLIM. And those individuals who were brave enough to run at large and got thousands of votes across the board are now pushed into the opposition because LORNA decided in her narcissistic mind that SHE ALONE is what is best for the country? GIVE ME A BREAK! Lorna should have stayed in the corner and stood strong in the NDP/PVIM coalition - even if the governor had to step in and assign a Premier in that instance we would surely have gotten someone with 3,000+ votes in the top seat, not someone with 487. I guarantee you that if those district elect VIP members had gone at large only KYE would have had any real chance of getting elected. NOBODY ELSE. NOBODY.

If Lorna left her other two NDP members and crossed over to form a coalition government with the 6 VIP Members means the 7 members of PVIM, NDP, PU including Lorna could not agree on a way forward to form and run a government. They asked for a coalition government. They got it. Now greed & selfishness caused them to throw it away. Obviously, they had no concern for the country other than themselves.

When someone tell you who they are believe them. Fraser like to lead but abhor being led. He left the VIP because he failed in leading the VIP to a shellacking at the polls and unwillingness to be led. He formed his own party, PU, but failed to get anyone to follow him. If you are a leader and look back and no one is following you are not leading. Fraser probably cost Ronnie the Premiership because he wanted to lead and not be led. The interaction among the opposition in the House of Assembly should be cold and tenuous. As another blogger, Political Analyst, noted, Lorna checkmated Julian. He is veteran legislation but got schooled and outmaneuvered.

What a Very, very, very sad.betrayal by the former NDP Premier Dr Orlando Smith's wife, Lorna Smith, for filthy lucre (money and fame) sake. It will backfire for sure, because it is void of God's righteous character. It mirrors Judas Iscariot the disciple that betrayed Jesus the Christ character in the garden of Gethsemane, after then, He was falsely accused, and crucified, though He was innocent.

When the wicked is in power the people morn, but when the righteous is, they rejoice.

As a non-belonger who is not privileged to be allowed to vote (along with the vast majority of adults in BVI) it is with dismay I see that only 9,171 voters turned out to vote from a total of 16,000. Over 40% of voters didn't exercise their democratic right. They say you get the politicians you deserve. The political class enjoy this voter apathy, so do go back to sleep because there will be no change in culture until the people of the BVI (whose ancestors bravely fought the oppression of slavery) participate actively in the politics of their homeland. Shameful.

She enjoy the votes and support of NDP supporters then she Leave them in the Ocean... Same Mistake PVIM made, they were to throw their support behind Aaron he would have beaten Frazer. They know Frazer is Problem.. If NDP and PVIM had work as one from the start it would have being an easy win..They would have had #3, #4 and #9.. look at the votes split.. .So, from the start they show a weakness, a dis interest in working together, so I guess Lorna couldn't take the nonsense no more..

During the negotiations, I thought if Ronnie and Frazer had a good heart and not power cravings, they would have made history and allowed the first female primier but lorna is showing her self to be hard at solving problems with her haist. She may crash that party too.

Bhudda Mather done good. Respect and I am sorry to see him fall victim to shenanigans when he could have had positive influence inside government.

However this pig is dressed up it is still a pig and exhibit pig behaviour. Lorna’s sudden, and surprising crossing of the floor is akin to a pimp slap of voters who a few hours earlier thought they were voting for her under the NDP umbrella. Boy they had a shock, disappointment and hurt feelings. Though the move is prompted as patriotism and statesmanship, it left many causalities in its wake, ie, voters, party supporters, fellow party members, etc. It wreaks of distrust, disloyalty, dishonor, etc. Can someone who can change allegiance as quickly,as easy and as uncertain as the wind can change direction be trusted. How much currency and confidence can put in her words and action. That people are angry and perhaps in an unforgiving state is an under statement. The hurt and disappointment will endured for a long time. Some privately go as far as making a comparison to Benedict Arnold and Neville Chamberlain former British Prime minister. That is a bridge too far perhaps but people feel abused and used.

Sadly A lot of people are feeling like the day Head Coach was detained. Shock, disbelief, betrayal etc. by this turn of events. But who knows? It could be a blessing or a curse. Let’s pray that it’s for the better.
