ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Authorities in the Virgin Islands (VI) have confirmed that a native of the Dominican Republic who travelled to the VI and was subsequently refused entry by Immigration, has escaped quarantine as is now at large in the territory.

Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) in a statement today, December 22, 2020, confirmed that the passenger arrived on Sunday, December 20, 2020, at the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport, however, was placed into quarantine pending a flight out, after he was denied entry.

According to the Minister, “The passenger was then transported to Wyndham Tortola (Lambert Beach Resort) where he was expected to quarantine and await the scheduled departure from the Territory on Monday, 21st December 2020.”

“Unfortunately, routine checks of the passenger’s room revealed that he had left the room and possibly left the resort.  I am aware that this incident has brought a level of unrest and fear to the public, especially considering the possible effects of COVID-19,” Hon Wheatley said.

Escapee tested negative for COVID-19 - Hon Wheatley

The Minister in an effort to quell the fears of the public said that upon arrival, however, the man took a COVID-19 PCR test which returned a negative result.

“While this negative test result may bring some level of relief, the fact that he has broken the law and remains at large is still of great concern for us as a Government as it should be for you as a people.”

According to Hon Wheatley, the Immigration Department with the assistance of the Joint Task Force are not executing an extensive operation to locate the man and enforce all penalties appropriate for the level of violation.

Hon Wheatley also urged the public to assist with sharing any information regarding the whereabouts of the individual or who is harbouring him.

Having a negative result upon arrival does not mean he is free of the virus.

If having a negative test upon arrival meant nothing to be concerned about there would be no need to quarantine for 4 days, which is being reviewed to extend.

How many so far tested positive after the first test? A number of persons.

Why was there no police officer guarding this man?

    Tell us the WHOLE TRUTH.

Cut the Sunday School Crap if someone is denied entry there should be a proper detention center to house such person until they are escorted out of the country. It is quite evident that BVI does not have a "Real World" mindset and can be played by people who are "Up to de Time." Instead of crucifying persons who try to bring us out of la la land wake up and get with the program. Talking about there is no corruption in BVI. It is because of money that islanders are kept in this retarded mentality. It is a shame and disgrace to have people acting B.C. in the 21st century. The sad truth is that this is what the religious and political leadership promote for their personal financial benefit. Sell your soul for a piece of gold no regard for how much damage is done to country or people as long as some dollars play up. This is a straight up recipe for disaster. The truth is an offense but its the truth.

There are other things beside Covid we have to be concern about with this man on the loose. We do not know what he is up to. We showing so much BVI LOVE that we let a man who is denied entry in our country through the place doing God knows what. We have to be smarter than that. Have a secure place to house people in that situation. It is not everybody coming with good intention most coming with bad intention.

He came here to do illegal dirt. Why else would he run? Someone here was expecting him and he is probably hiding with them. When he is found, fine and jail him for being a slickster and possibly endangering all of us. I hope I see him, he will be arrested so fast.

Packed on a boat partying? They must be smoking stupid bush.

One flyer after the next advertising Christmas and New Year parties as though we are not dealing with a pandemic.

So many in the BVI have died this year and though not from COVID that we know of with the exception of one, if they have not learnt to value life by now they really don’t care about themselves or others.

We don’t have one life to live, we have an opportunity to live again with Christ in heaven or be exiled to hell.

If people can’t on a daily basis listen to gospel, worship, pray, be a blessing to others, obey God’s laws, study the scriptures (not just one day of the week or in some cases 2 hrs a week because some only go to church to show their “church flow” on social media and the minute church is over it’s back to wayward ways.

Hurricanes Irma/Maria and Pandemic Covid-19 has taught nothing to many people.

Tell a hurricane or a earthquake that it can't enter the bvi unless it clares immigration or customs. Mankind will never learn, only the chosen few.

    Dear Vizencio

Great speech, great that you complain about the man leaving quarantine and that we the people should not accept this.

But we also DO NOT accept your lack of responsibility! Your department failed (once again).

Negative test on arrival. Refuse entry for what ever reason....should have been detained at the police lock up, then removed. Something does not sound right about this.

This man was seen in the area of Beef Island Bridge, at about 5:50 am on Monday 21st heading west. He was in the vicinity of the Airport earlier that same morning. He was asking people about where he could purchase a cell phone and enquired about the number of Dominicans living in the territory. My bet is that he is hiding out within that community.

      Read the comment again:

"If having a negative test upon arrival meant nothing to be concerned about there would be no need to quarantine for 4 days, which is being reviewed to extend." - it says IF having a negative test upon arrival meant nothing (like the Minister is indicating) then there would be no need for quarantine. In other words it is in disagreement with the Minister's viewpoint.

Quarantine periods are for visitors cleared by immigration (4-7 days)
Refused Entry is a detainee (to return next day; or next available flight)

    Somebody was playing the fool.
