DR diaspora marks Independence with a Baseball Tournament in the VI

LONG BUSH, Tortola, VI - As part of the Dominican Republic 2024 independence activities which is celebrated on February 28, 2024, each year, persons from the Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic Diaspora hosted a baseball tournament deemed ‘Torneo de Independencia’ in the Virgin Islands.

The tournament was held from Thursday, February 21, 2024, to Sunday, February 25, 2024. 

In attendance for one of the games was Premier Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) along with Minister for Communications & Works Hon. Kye M. Rymer (R5) and Former District 4 representative Mark H. Vanterpool. 

The Premier’s office in a statement said, “A fun time was had by all. We once again congratulate the people of the Dominican Republic on celebrating their independence.”

Meanwhile, sources told our newsroom that the event was also coordinated by Leroy James Jr of The Edge Night Club. 

Present for the tournament was also Dominican–American professional baseball second baseman, Robinson José Canó Mercedes from the Diablos Rojos del México of the Mexican League, who also captains the Estrellas Orientales of the Dominican Professional Baseball League.

    D.R. Independence Day is not on the 28th, it is on the 27th of February.
