Seven years later, the signage has been updated through a Building Cleaning and Signage Project between the Virgin Islands Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) and the BVI Health Services Authority.
"For many, the name Peebles Hospital still carries deep meaning, representing decades of care and service to the Virgin Islands. With the opening of the new facility in December 2014, that legacy transitioned into a modern era of healthcare. In January 2019, the hospital was renamed in honour of Dr D. Orlando Smith, the first locally distinguished surgeon and former Premier, cementing his contribution to national development.
"Now, as part of our ongoing works, the former Pebbles Hospital sign is being removed, making way for updated signage that reflects the hospital’s present-day identity: Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital. It’s a small but powerful change, one that brings the physical space in line with its name, its legacy, and its future," the RDA stated on April 29, 2026.
Dr Wheatley-led Gov't allocated $$ since 2024
It has been since November 2024 that the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government, led by Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), allocated $500,000 for the design, supply, and installation of a new sign for the Dr D Orlando Smith Hospital, according to a Schedule of Additional Provisions (SAP) update from the government.
“Obviously, that’s something that has been long outstanding. It came to my attention, and I said to the Ministry of Finance, let’s solve it. Let’s not let it linger any longer. Let us solve it and ensure that we honour my cousin, my father’s first cousin, Dr D Orlando Smith. It’s been way too long,” Dr Wheatley had stated in the House of Assembly in November 2024.

Peebles Hospital was renamed to Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital in January 2019. This change was made to honor Dr. D. Orlando Smith, a prominent surgeon and former Premier of the British Virgin Islands (BVI). The decision to rename the hospital was part of an effort to recognize his contributions to healthcare in the region.
The hospital was originally known as the Cottage Hospital and was renamed Peebles Hospital in the 1950s after Major Herbert W. Peebles.

There is no doubt OS is a great person but .......
We now have rid of Peebles, Briarcliffe. Who is next. Surely if any name should be removed it should be Francis Drake (but we seem to celebrate criminals so probably not). Queen Elizabeth's time soon come.
Independence cant come soon enough. We can get to work recognising VI culture, spending money renaming everything.
