BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- Former Government Consultant and radio personality Claude O. Skelton-Cline has said that despite lingering doubts by the population of the [British] Virgin Islands (VI), citizens must ensure they register to vote in the upcoming elections.

Speaking on the radio show Honestly Speaking, which was streamed live on Facebook on March 7, 2023, Skelton-Cline noted that it is vitally important for citizens of the VI to exercise these rights.

“If you have not yet registered, people, this is especially for you. Those of you who have come of age, I want to encourage you to register to vote…So that you can participate in voting- one of your civic responsibilities. You can’t have freedom without responsibility.

“I know there’s some disenchantment, some discontent, some cynicism, some skepticism amongst the voting population; and I suspect that there are legitimate reasons to feel that way. But you cannot make eternal and commercial decision based on your feelings,” Skelton- Cline said, while noting that the decision to vote has to go beyond these feelings.

He continued by urging the population not to leave the future of their destiny in the hands of others.

'Do not remain silent'- Skelton-Cline

“It is not sufficient to be a silent bystander…There are those who wish to put out your voice, though there are those who wish to make you feel less than [them], though there are those who wish to convince you that your vote or your thought or your opinion doesn’t matter. You cannot afford, not just for yourself but for the future generations, to remain silent”, he reiterated.

Skelton- Cline continued by saying that civic rights do not end at the ballot box, but how electors go about holding those that are elected responsible.

While no official date has been set for the 2023 general elections, it is constitutionally due to take place no later than May 12.

The House of Assembly is constitutionally required to be dissolved by March 12, 2023, in advance of a general election that must be held within 21 days to 2 months later.

I am voting VIP ALL THE WAY this time. The few who hating on them are too ungrateful and a few others letting the devious governor plot blind them.

I want to agree with sentiments expressed and join with one of the bloggers and urge Claude Skelton Cline to go and sit in the corner rather than making himself a public neusance. He has used up all of his trump cards and only has the jokers remain. I have a good advice to give to him and it is from the book of Proverbs. When a fool remains quiet, he is considered to be wise. There is nothing that he would be able to influence to do.

My family and I are strong NDP supporters and our son is in university and could not afford to stay and we could not afford to keep him in university. We swallowed our pride and went to the VIP Government for assistance. To our surprise the response was we have to help our people especially in the area of education. They gave us the assistance, so I am one on the list going around and I am proud of my son and thankful for the help they gave me knowing that I was a strong NDP supporter. I have to give them a few votes this time because they showed that our tax money was for everyone as much as it can stretch and not just for who supports them. This is a real story, and many more persons have this same story. The VIP is not as bad as some are intentionally trying to paint them. I wish them luck with the elections.

CSC used the VIP and then drop them like a hot Potatoe. This is the only failure I have of the VIP is that they try to help too many people whether they are with them or not who turn around to be ungrateful and bad minded. The VIP means well and has done more good than what bad some are only now trying to highlight during election season forgetting the mess they met from Iram and Maria that the last NDP government left and add to that Covid which no government knew what to do but the VIP did well and deserves a second chance.

I do not like everything the VIP did, but the fact of the matter is they came to power in 2019 during the roughest time in the history of the BVI. They did plenty good. Some only highlighting what they think is bad but the good out numbers that list by far. My family and I did not vote VIP the last time, but we will be voting VIP this time.

I agree that all must go out and vote. It is a right our ancestors fought for, and it should never be taken lightly. Your voice is through your vote. Do not let anyone including the tactics of this colonial devious governor & UK officials influence how you will vote.
