ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A document on Self-Governance Assessment of the Virgin Islands, done by an International Advisor on Governance and United Nations expert, will be released to the public, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr The Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has stated.

Speaking at a press conference on May 27, 2022, Dr Wheatley said since its handover, he has advocated for the release of the Self-Governance Assessment of the Virgin Islands completed by independent governance expert Dr Carlyle Corbin.

The assessment was done to give the public additional information that would be helpful in preparing for a Constitutional Review.

Document will first be taken to Cabinet- Premier

The Premier said the document to date has not been shared in any public forum, but only noted for the record at the United Nations Pacific Regional Seminar on Decolonisation.

I am pleased to report that, now as Premier, I am taking the self-governance assessment to Cabinet, which was not previously done. It will then be officially published for the public’s consideration,” Dr Wheatley said.

The Premier noted that the Government of National Unity wants to ensure the public has good reference material in this new era of democratic governance as changes are made for the betterment of the Virgin Islands.

VI systematically prepared for independence- Dr Corbin

Dr Corbin, speaking on the Honestly Speaking radio show on March 29, 2022, pointed out that while the VI has more preparations to make as it relates to seeking independence from the United Kingdom (UK), the territory is already systematically prepared for self-governance.

The International Expert had also said the VI must now explore whether it wishes to proceed to independence and how to proceed, which are all issues to be determined, “but certainly the society is prepared,” he said.

Dr Corbin had also advised that should the VI decide to seek independence, the UN has the mandate to assist, along with the support of the administering power.

Self Governance means, one ability to govern themselves and their affairs. We all know how successful that has been. If wasn't for the good COI they will continue their corrupt schemes and their corrupt plots and bad ways. This move at this time is not a wise one..It's like saying to us the people and Britain "Leave us to hell alone let us so as we wish".

Self governance is defined by our politicians as the ability to rape the public purse with no recourse or penalties.

Not the report we’re all asking for, why haven’t you published your joint party suggestions to the uk government to help avoid suspension of the constitution,or is it to embarrassing!

A little too late Premier! This document should have been shared with the public before it was sent to the UN. We did not give you the right to do so on our behalf. We did not give you or your brother no mandate to determine our future.

Seems like they have something to hide, once before it was we were in compliance with the UK rule, now, out of the blue, it's self-independence.

We can't manage our own money effectively, how can we run our own affairs; can you imagine the level of corruption ahead if we leave these people to do as they wish with our monies.

Somebody, please come for your uncle Corbin.
Tell that man to mind his own business. who feels it knows it.

once again government finds good money to waste on unnecessary consultant

    Another distraction
The chips have not all fallen as yet, let’s allow that process to finish.
Meanwhile, try to manage territory with a view to cost reduction, not just spending more.
Anyone with business experience knows you need to support the private sector, they pay the bills and are suffering the worst.

Why bother, the info is useless now that direct rule by the UK is coming to the BVI. No wonder the locals call him Slow wande.

I have read, and understand so far your core intention double tongue. You pretend that you are ready to cooperate with our Governor in regards to the CoI recommdations, but evidences show that you are not yet ready to submit under their, the UK's leadership.
In my honest opinion. You are either confused or willfully determine not to accept a subordinate position under the UK's leadership in persue of good governance for the betterment of our country, but rather the views that suit your own, and others, that have not experienced local political corruption as we the people have suffered under some, surely not all our
political leaders equallyy, in my honest opinion.
The former Premier of the BVI failed shamefully mainly because of his own selfish desires for political power and wants. Beware current Premier, beware of false advisors that do not have our country's people best interest at heart at this point and time.

There is no way the territory is ready or prepared for this. Sorry but Wheatley are you on some type of stupid or what?!!. This is only going to allow the same DIRTINESS THAT GOT US WHERE WE ARE AND RAMP UP THE DIRTINESS TO CONTINUE. IF THIS IS ALLOWED TO HAPPEN, everyone is going to cut off aid to the BVI including the AMERICAN DOLLAR. This little boy in a grown man’s body is power tripping.

This man is not an expert in governance, he is a self proclaimed campaigner for self-determination. Hardly balanced!
    • Roscoe (31/05/2022, 11:30) Like (1) Dislike (0) Reply
Self-determination comes in three forms: Independence is only one of the forms. Free association nd integration are the other two forms. The author of the Assessment on the VI made this point repeatedly during his presentations on the findings. He does not appear to be an advocate for anything except for us to progress to a status of full self-government. The present colonial status is no longer in our interest.

WE HAVE A FAR WAY MORE TO GO IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THIS. WE ARE NOT READY FOR THIS AS YET - JUST TAKE ONE LOOK AT COI REPORT. VAST MAJORITY OF BVI PEOPLE NOT READY FOR SELF GOVERNACE. WE HAVE TO PUT NECCESSARY SYSTEMS IN PLACE . THANK GOD FOR THE UK SECURITY AFTER HURRICANES AND COI REPORT.

For those of you who think that independence is such a terrible idea rest a sure that we are much closer to integration. Once the UK strip you of your Belongers status and open the political spectrum to UK citizens for all intent and purpose we will be integrated. With no exemptions and no special treatments you will have to swim in the pool with the big fishes. Some of you foolishly think that since you are doing ok that you can survive whatever comes. The only way you survive unscathed is if there is no economical interest in the VI to lure the big fishes. In the big pool the big fishes dominate.

Self-Governance? maybe in the next 10-20 years. No proper infrastructure, the roads is in shambles, A open dump site that is killing people from the poisonous toxic smoke that is constantly blowing in the air, no proper Medical facility, no proper water system, sewer running from the majority of houses on the hillside eroding the hillside and the roads we drive on everyday, no military force to protect us and the list goes on and on.

This is why there is so much political violence around the world. Who told this "expert" that "the society is prepared" for independence? Was it the Drew? Did you know anything about this, Mr. Sowande? Tell us the truth.

I would like to see the Virgin Islands and other overseas territory become part Global Britain with one citizenship and representation in the UK government.

A power sharing arrangement sounds about right.
The Prime Minister could be an English person. And the Chancellor of the Exchequer should be a Virgin Islander.
