‘Do good & I will have a drink with you in the dark’– Hon Fraser tells Gov't
The Government on Friday, April 12, 2024, recommissioned the Burt Point Wastewater Treatment Plant at Burt Point in the Virgin Islands. The plant was damaged by the hurricanes of 2017 and this resulted in raw sewage flowing into the sea.
Hon Fraser said some speculated that the plant may have been out of commission even before the hurricanes. “I continue to talk about it… last Tuesday in the House of Assembly I did mention it among other things, and see what happened? It's commissioned,” he said.
He expressed gratitude to the Premier, and Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) for being consistent on the project and keeping him up-to-date with developments.
Keep the plant functional - Hon Fraser
“I will criticise you, but if you do good, I’ll have a drink with you in the dark. I don’t always want people to know that I’m sitting around you, having a drink with you,” he said.
Hon Fraser also highlighted the importance of the plan and urged the government to do what is necessary to keep the plant functional.
The plant is now set to treat sewage from several areas including Road Town, Long Bush, Baughers Bay, Free Bottom, Purcell Estate, Hunthums Ghut, and Horspath.
“Please, do whatever is necessary to keep the plant functional. Don’t let it just be there and us thinking that it's functioning because if it's not functioning, I’m going to come back and tell the people again,” Hon Fraser told the government.

Moreover, politics is the second oldest profession following closely behind the first and bearing a close resemblance to the first..Aristotle defines humans as being political animals(Zoa politika). The HoA is the natural habit of political animals where they meet to interact and cooperate, collaborate to establish laws and build institutions on which social order and justice depend. Compromise is the art of politics and its animating force is conflict and disagreement is the essence of politics.. And though politics is war without bloodshed, it is ok to sit down in the open to have a drink. Hiding to have a drink in the dark is cowardice, sending bad/wrong messages. Keep it real.
Yes, it is commendable that the Burt Point Sewage Treatment Plant has been recommissioned and back in operaton. And now it is back in operations, government must put a structured, robust operations and maintenance plan to keep the plant trlisbly operating and functional. I have an image synched in my head. In October 2017, on my back from West End having drop my sister off to the catch the ferry, I observed someone fishing not to far down stream from the Burt Point outfall. On another note, what level is the sewage being treated to, ie, secondary or tertiary.
