POCKWOOD POND, Tortola, VI- The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will launch a pilot initiative, the Hybrid Online Vehicle Renewal Programme for Tortola.

The pilot set to begin on May 11, 2026, will be for May only and promises faster processing, reduced wait times, and easy online document uploads.

Described by the DMV as a “faster, smarter way to renew your vehicle license,” the pilot programme is open to all interested persons.

Steps involved

The process for the online vehicle renewal consists of six steps, and vehicle owners are encouraged to upload information two or more days before expiration.

Step 1: Take your vehicle to any ore-approved garage for inspection. Step 2: Pay an inspection fee of $20.00 to the garage. Step 3: Upon passing, you will receive a garage report. Step 4: The garage report, along with your insurance policy, will be uploaded to the designated online platform (details will be provided). Step 5: A DMV representative will contact you to finalise payment. Step 6: Once completed, simply visit the DMV to collect your decal.

The DMV said the processing time is two days from the receipt of all required documents. Interested persons can sign up by sending an email including their full name and phone number to dmv@gov.vg.

Efforts to get further details from Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) and Acting Commissioner of the Department of Disaster Management (DMV) Mr Gregory Skelton were futile.

This doesn’t solve the problem. The wait for the free inspection outside doesn’t take long. The wait for them inside to call you is the problem. Fix that part.

But, as with so many initiatives, it was clearly put together by someone who has never lived in the real world. It still has too many steps and too many points where it relies on people to do their job (are we really stupid enough to believe that someone from DMV will call us to take payment or will we end up trying to call to pay as no one has called and then in frustration as no one answers the phones go down and pay in person?).

Payment should be online, perhaps the garage doing the test could apply the decal, what about having a national insurance database so there is no need to upload documents but the DMV would just be able to see whether you are insured (this would also assist the police).

It's a start, but it could be so much better with a little bit more thought and imagination.

I agree; we need a portal to pay online ourselves. I'm not giving my personal Cvv to no body online; the history is real.

Where are these inspection stations located, and what times will they operate? I hope there is one in East End, since we have the largest population, and this would solve the problem of over-congesting Road Town.

I would think workers report for 8:30 to open up and make the space ready for customers. At the end of the day they have to count and recount collections to make sure it's correct and then prepare it for deposit to the bank in the same day.

And that process is your fix! Come on man. Why not start with something simple like...New vehicles don't need inspections for the first 5 years and then inspections every other year

would be more reasonable. New vehicle buyers pay 3 years licencing up front - better cash flow for the DMV, less congestion at their office

why one would go this 2+ days process, drive to a garage, pay an additional $20 for the inspection, waste time uploading everything online and then still drive all the way to Pockwood Pond and wait for the decal. The current system sounds cheaper and faster...

the customer service is extremely poor at DMV . NO FRONTLINE OFFICER should be seen with ear pods ear bods what ever u call . you think them talking to you that time they having their conversation on their phone, then u think the cashiers doing something the one who isnt doing anything calling the other one to show her order on shein , i wonder if them think we the customers cant hear them. i am so fed up of dmv the governor i wont say the minister the governor or deputy governor deal with this sort of customer service at dmv, every dept move back to 830 to 430 why not them . casiers suppose to close at 330 not 3 , it sickening

It's best if I go down to the DMV, wait in line and save $20. Because the wait time is practically the same. This will work for those who are travelling from Anegada, Virgin Gorda, and Yost Van Dyke.

flashy flyer but nonsense. Got us driving up and down when we could get vehicle inspected for free. It will take more time for the customer but less hassle for the DMV - thinking of themselves, not us.

when ANYONE RUN THE VIN number ON AI or any other site vehicles is not the same year it's been sold as.
what the DMV can do about this.

This is just my opinion. When your vehicle gets inspected at DMV, there should be a teller next to the DMV inspector where you pay and move. No need to go inside and pay. You get inspected and you get the sticker. Then you move forward to the teller and pay and go home. You should only go on the inside to renew your license , do a transfer or take the written test and to do your eye test.

Suggestion is to put a cashier with a guard by the window outside by the inspection lane. It would make things a lot easier. People won't need to go inside to sit and wait, while the workers twiddle their thumbs before deciding to call the next person.

Starting today? Where are these inspection garages located? You forgot to tell us that.
