District 6 has a new Basketball Court!
In front of a small crowd, undoubtedly diminished by the early evening rains, At Large representative Irene Penn O’Neal flanked by the Minister for Natural Resources and Labour and representative for the 6th District, Omar Hodge, as well as, the Minister for Education, Culture and Sports, Andrew Fahie, stated that the Court, renovated at a cost of $70,000, was testament to the “commitment of the Virgin Islands Party to youths in the district and part of a Territory-wide initiative to improve sports and recreational facilities.”
Mrs. Penn O’Neal, an avid fan of Basketball, also added that many of the young people present not only would benefit from the new court but also “had been instrumental in its construction” through numerous petty contracts issued by the VIP Government and “they should be proud of their achievement”.
She said hopefully it would also prove a stepping stone for them to pursue “further opportunities in the construction field, small businesses or even as coaches.”
The court, now covered with a state of the art blue surface, new lights and wooden bleachers, will serve to regenerate the game in a District which once was home to the Bullets.
As the contractor and National Basketball Coach Keith “88” Malone commented, “It was a much needed project and long overdue. The history of basketball in the district is rich and the rivalry with the Bullets, one that I remember vividly.”
District 6 will now be able to practice and get ready for the BD Basketball District King League with more optimism and dedication and all the youths will have a safe environment in which to play.
Tonya Hodge gave a message of thanks as a member of the Purcell Estate community.
