DUFFS BOTTOM, Tortola, VI – Virgin Islands (VI) Premier and Minister of Finance Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has called on persons in the VI to remember their culture as it related to respect and values, especially when disagreeing on an issue.

“I'm not going to get angry with people and fighting people because we disagree on an issue,” Premier Fahie said during the 12th Sitting of the 3rd Session of the 4th House of Assembly on November 5, 2021.

Hon Fahie said since taking up the role as premier, he has had to say more prayers than usual.

“When you hear what some people tell you and you being respectful to them and if you answer some of them out of the way, you’re the only one have something to lose so you have to shut your mouth,” he said.

The Premier continued, “But we have to learn also how to teach people what our fore-parents did. How do I disagree with the Leader of the Opposition without degrading his character? How do I disagree with the Minister of Education without degrading his character?” the Premier questioned.

Culture or respect- Premier Fahie

The Premier said being respectful was part of the VI culture; however, he said respect has been going out the door even as the people have become more educated.

“We're allowing ourselves to get in a position where we could become enslaved again because some people think that their own is not good enough to do anything,” he said.

“That's why when the 1949 March came up, it would have had more unity than [now] because it was not about fighting for something personal."

Some persons have sought to justify their disrespectful expressions towards elected officials due to revelations of the Commission of Inquiry, even though there has been no evidence of corruption but rather a need to introduce or tighten policies for transparency and accountability.

Awesome observation Mr. Fahie as it relates to respect & tradition. I'm with you all the way!
Perhaps we don't always articulate our point effectively and so as a leader you just have to try to sift through the concerns and opinions of your constituents. We mean well sir.
In the present matter Mr. Premier the courts have spoken, the speaker have completely overreacted his authority not to mention his disrespect and abhorrence for the Attorney General. He simply must be replaced if your administration is to have a shot at reelection.
All the best to you sir....please listen to the people who hired you. Thank you.

Hon Fahie said since taking up the role as premier, he has had to say more prayers than usual, can someone tell us who he is praying to? I can’t believe this government talks about respect when they don’t respect anything. Most of the government has disrespected a court ruling by the judge on Willock case.
Some persons have sought to justify their disrespectful expressions towards elected officials due to revelations of the Commission of Inquiry, even though there has been no evidence of corruption but rather a need to introduce or tighten policies for transparency and accountability. If you think they haven’t found any corruption just wait for round two.

What can be more degrading that misrepresenting the people that employed you as their financial leader with their finances?
I see. So you are hoping the the west wind will blow the CoI all the way back to the UK. You know who they are you said. Whw. Is so, si si providing you with what should be confidential info. On person's identity.
Finance is a vital necessity to each person of every country..
Political leaders should be careful not to disrespect those that intrusted them to managed their finances.
Again, you said that the CoI has no evidence of politiians mismanagement of our finances.
Tell that to a donkey, but make sure that you stay clear it back feet. Mine opinion.

The animating force of politics is conflict; no conflict no politics. It is war without bloodshed, resolving disagreements without vice. It is the art of the compromise. The late former US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg : You can disagree without being disagreeable. Political discourse(s) should be based on policy debates. Elections have consequences. Debates completed, the elected government gets to set public policies. Of course, government has to be in tune with a majority of the people. It is impossible to please a 100% of the people 100%. Hell, it is difficult to please a majority of people 60% of the time.

Real talk but pure idealism. BVI politics as elsewhere is now operating in a cesspool and that is not surprising, for from its inception it has always been Machiavellian, ie, by any means necessary. BVI politics sadly is not in a good place; it is an abyss.

Leonard, it seems as if you are always providing Fahie an escape hatch. Call a spade a spade and don’t condone political nonsense. You like to fence sit and force us to read between the lines. You may say that you are not a politician but you write like one. The BVI needs a new crop of seasoned, well-reasoned, patriotic, nationalistic, straight arrow, nation building, people serving/servant leaders etc politicians. Where can we find them?
