VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI- Leader of the National Democratic Party (NDP) Hon Marlon A. Penn has been slammed for engaging in dirty politics, in referring to Virgin Islands Party (VIP) political opponents as pigs.

Hon Penn, who has served three terms as the Eighth District Representative, was at the time speaking at the launch of the NDP’s Ninth District candidate Coy W. Levons on Virgin Gorda on Friday, March 24, 2023.

‘You could put on lipstick on that pig…” Hon Penn

While boasting that he had on expensive cologne, Hon Penn criticised the VIP of dirty politics but began to engage in the same thing he was accusing it of.

“You could dress up a pig in a suit, you could put on lipstick on that pig, you could put on a Jimmy Choo perfume, and I have on my Jimmy Choo Blue and I smell really nice tonight, but that pig is only going to do what a pig does, root in the mud.

“And we have seen since Friday night, in their launch in Virgin Gorda, all they have done is go in the mud and that was culminated in the activities of last night,” Hon Penn stated, while claiming that his party is focused on solutions to the issues that plague the Virgin Islands.

In his same speech, Hon Penn also referred to ex-premier Andrew A. Fahie as “Hurricane Andrew”, which he said “created significant destruction to the Virgin Islands.

Hon Penn’s behaviour unacceptable- L. Allen Wheatley

Meanwhile, Hon Penn was called out by his Eighth District opponent Mr L. Allen Wheatley, who said it was unacceptable for someone aspiring to be a premier to describe his countrymen and women as pigs.

“Because, if that is what he is doing, there is nowhere in the world he should be considered to be a premier of any place, including the BVI,” Mr Wheatley stated during the campaign launch of the VIP’s Ninth District candidate and incumbent representative Hon Vincent O. Wheatley on Saturday, March 25, 2023.

More and more people are asking how come the COI, the Governor, the Auditor General and the UK Head of Police in the BVI are ignoring all the questionable conduct of Fraser and the NDP. No mention of the eight-million-dollar plane heist. No mention of the rich eighty folks that got Belongers under the NDP in 2019 fast track programme that did not qualify while the common man who lived in the BVI for years was ignored. No mention of the Sea Cow's Bay harbor project and all the money to their brother and themselves. No mention of the overpriced pier project of one hundred million dollars. No mention of the overpriced eighty-million-dollar new hospital building. No mention of the Georgie Hill Road project that started in the thousands and ended up in the millions with many people land taken and not compensated to date. The list is endless. Something is not right here. Is it they are all working together to try to influence the elections against the VIP to get VIP out of office so they can take over and sell us out for their freedom? SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT!!!

The country went through the roughest four years of its existence. The VIP had to deal with Irma damages that were not fixed by NDP and had to deal with covid which was the worse pandemic in the last 100yrs, and they did well. They were not perfect, but they did well especially when you compare them to other governments including the UK. Remember the UK told the BVI they are not giving us any grants or funds to help with covid and they further said use our own funds to help ourselves as they have to use what they have to help their UK residents in the UK. The health people in the BVI said if the government do not act swiftly the BVI would have between 3500 to 5000 people with covid and will die and the numbers will continue to increase. The VIP Government was criticized by Fraser and the NDP 1 & NDP 2 for closing down the cruise industry & then the entire country only to see two weeks later the entire world followed the BVI and shut down to try to save lives. If this was not done most of us would not be alive now. As a people we need to remember these facts and give VIP a second term rather than listening to those who sold us out to get power from those who refused to help us but now trying to make us look bad through COI & other actions to save themselves and their face. OJ has my vote with VIP.

I’m not party-affiliated but the current Premier looks silly prancing up and down on the stage ranting and mud-slinging.

State your case and sit down.

There SHOULD BE A LAW in place that the ELECTION date is a SET DATE and campaigning must be no less than 90 days after dissolution of the HOA.

Currently this is FOOLISHNESS. The people won’t be tricked into KEEPING THE SAME PEOPLE IN BECAUSE THE TIME WAS SHORT FOR OTHERS TO CAMPAIGN:

“Section 86 of the Virgin Islands Constitution Order 2007 states, “a general election shall be held at such time within two months, but not earlier than twenty-one days, of the dissolution of the House of Assembly as the Governor shall appoint by proclamation published in the Gazette”. The House of Assembly was dissolved on March 10, 2023.”

Don’t mind the noise on the animal farm. It’s all just a distraction, to get us as voters to become riled up with the hee-hawing and oink-oinking that is occurring.

This election is too pivotal in our territory’s history, to entrust ourselves into the hands of unscrupulous men and women, who are unable to manage themselves much less manage this country.

Calling and comparing country men and women, family and long-term friends pigs is poor form, poor leadership(leaders set and demonstrate exemplary behavior for others to emulate and follow). Strong, confident and effective leaders don’t resort to this type of gutter, dung heap, dirty, etc politics. This type of sordid behavior we have grown to expect from the 45th President of US Donald J. Trump whose message is mostly about racism, hatred, and division, not about substantive policies. Trump caters to a 30-35% of population with historical dissatisfaction. His approach won him the Presidency so one can see but not agree with why one would adopt that style.
That brand of politics which pits groups against one another is a contributor to deep polarization and division among the Multicultural US population, causing erosion in its socioeconomic standing at home and abroad, along with its sociopolitical, geopolitical standing. It has sullied the US image of American Exceptionalism abroad and at home. It has weakened the US influence and standing across the globe. That brand of politics should not be emulated and normalize in the BVI. Can that import. Comparing political combatants to pigs seemed like desperation. Moreover, since beating the former District Rep in 2011, the current D-8 Rep has not had any strong challengers in subsequent elections in 2015, and 2019, winning those contests with healthy margins. And Now that he has seemly serious challenge, panic seems to be seeping in,, descending into the gutter. A campaign should be about policy(s) debate and trying to convince voters to side with you. There is no shortage of issues to debate in the 8th District. There is much work to do in the district. As the 3-term rep, the current D-8 Rep has the inherent advantage. Is it puzzling why a supposedly popular 3-term rep would descend to such bottomless depth in the gutter?

For the life of me, I never thought anyone in the BVI would practice Trump brand of campaign. True political opponents candidates are not going to be holding hands singing kumbya. But hitting below the belt is out of bound. A potential Premier candidate should perform and behave better than this. A genuine apology would be a good start, though I’m not big on apologies, for they are excuses for people caught in bad behaviour.

While they gave out grants and stimulus packages to buy your votes. They were busy constructing bills to line their pockets whether they got back in office or did not.
Sharie has done little to nothing during her term especially at the beginning since she was busy throwing a tantrum because she was not given minister of education and even as the minister she has done nothing but repeat the phrase full steam ahead or give more to get back change.
We won’t even waste much time to talk about Sheep, Carvin ,or Shereen.
The VIP as a whole are mute about their ex leader Andrew. Who also called for a COI over and over for the NDP but ended up getting his wish while he was premier. Which showed us the dirty hands of him and many in his government. The VIP squandered 60million dollars in just four years with little to no territorial improvements other than those that were already in the making before they were elected however, they are trying to take credit for. Don’t forget that during this VIP term 10 million dollars in grants were given by the Premier’s office while our local schools lack basic necessities. My people loyalty should never equal stupidity!

It persists to be down and dirty because it persists to be down and dirty. Truth be told, many voters like the dirt. The people like the dirt and that is why the politicians dish it out in tun loads. In journalism negative news sell. And in politics dirt has an audience. The campaign is hot and opponents will be exploiting the weaknesses of opponents while distracting voters from the positive strengths of opponents. This politics 101.
