Digicel upgrades network as it gears up for 4G VI's launch

New Digicel BVI CEO, Declan Cassidy.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Ahead of its launch of 4G Mobile set for later this year, Digicel BVI today announced a significant upgrade to its EDGE network, delivering a better user experience and faster speeds for customers.

With phase one of the upgrade now completed, customers are experiencing download speeds twice as fast as before thanks to increased capacity on all of Digicel’s cell sites across the islands. And these speeds are set to be enjoyed by even more customers once phase two of the upgrade comes to completion in the coming weeks.

This two-stage upgrade is setting the scene for the launch of Digicel’s 4G Mobile network scheduled for later this year. Digicel’s 4G Mobile, based on HSPA+ technology, leapfrogs traditional 3G technologies and will take mobile internet browsing to the next level with speeds up to five times faster than 3G.

New Digicel BVI CEO, Declan Cassidy, is thrilled with the new speeds and said; “As part of our promise to deliver the best network to our customers across BVI, we are delighted to announce the successful upgrade of our current EDGE network which is now delivering speeds twice as fast as before. And that’s only the start of it. With phase two of the upgrade still to come, this is only setting the scene for what will be the fastest mobile internet browsing experience on the island when we launch 4G Mobile later this year.”

“4G Mobile is part of Digicel’s overall technology strategy. For us, we didn’t believe 3G was significantly better than EDGE and so we’re leapfrogging 3G and building a 4G network based on HSPA+ technology – which is five times faster than traditional 3G technologies.”

“And not only are we delivering faster speeds, our customers are also enjoying the best value in BVI with Digicel’s fantastic data packages starting from only $15 per month,” continued Cassidy.
