ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Digicel, as part of its Christmas promotion, yesterday November 18, 2011 at the Road Town Wholesale parking lot in Pasea Estate, allowed the public a first-hand feel of what its Christmas promotion was all about and some of the local and most willing journalists were even able to grab some cash as well.

According to Digicel CEO Allan Bates, Digicel is always coming up with innovative and exciting ways of giving back to their customers and the $60,000 Christmas Grab was one of the latest initiatives to captivate customers.

The communications giant is teaming up with Road Town Wholesale for the initiative and customers can become eligible for one of the four draws by simply topping up $15 or more, buying a Blackberry or any phone on a prepaid or post paid service or paying their Digicel bill on time and in full. Draws will be made on November 29 and 30th and December 7th, 14th and 21st.

The objective of the initiative is for customers to grab as many dollars as possible in a mere matter of ten seconds as the cash is blown around in a plastic vault.

The first luck customer, a one Mr. Cole, was indeed lucky as he, instead of grabbing the cash in mid air decided to take it from the bottom of the vault, which was only allowed for him and also saw him grabbing the lion’s share of the bills. He ended up with $380 cash and $660 in cash. He said he was a Digicel customer for the past three years and his words to the media were simply “the bigger better network”.

The media was also allowed to enter into the vault with Island Sun, BVI Hot Press, Zrod and Virgin Islands News Online, getting into the act. The Island Sun reporter did a fine job of “cash grabbing” while radio announcer Zan Lewis saw the rules bend in his favour as he stooped to collect his haul instead of grabbing from the air. The announcers said they saved the best for last, Virgin Islands News Online to enter the vault, but this reporter was only able to grab 20 dollars cash and 60 dollars in credit and may need to go back to the drawing board as he thought he had the strategy all figured out!

The objective of yesterday’s activity, according to Mr. Bates, was to let the public know about Digicel’s Christmas promotion and for them to get an early feel of the excitement and the rules of the promotion.

The first drawing, which will be done on November 29, 2011, will see some $20, 000 in the vault while the drawing in December 14 in Virgin Gorda will have some $25, 000 in the vault.

Fraser did not liberate telecoms on his own. The Cable and Wireless franchise was becoming due anyway, and it was open to others to vie for a licence as well. How long we can sustain 3 mobile systems is open to doubt.
