NEW AMSTERDAM, Guyana, SA- Word reaching our newsroom is that popular Guyanese businessman Desmond Alphonso aka ‘DA’ passed away around 1:30pm on Thursday, January 13, 2022.

Mr Alphonso, who had come to the Virgin Islands as an 8-month-old baby, was infamously deported to Guyana in June 2011, at age 41, after falling afoul of the law in the Territory.

He had established a successful trucking business in the territory, which continued to be run by relatives, even after Mr Alphonso was no longer in the VI.

His deportation had sparked much public debate, with some arguing that he should have not have been deported since the VI was the only place he knew.

About three months after his deportation, in September 2011, Mr Alphonso had granted an exclusive interview to Virgin Islands News Online (VINO), revealing that he had settled into his new environment in Tucber, New Amsterdam.

‘No regrets’

“I have no regrets coming back home, it is the best thing that ever happen to me, the people and the place real nice and everyone friendly. From the outside people talk about killing and stealing but everything just cool and normal. I feel more relaxed, I go and come when I want,” the businessman had revealed.

He had admitted that at first when he was deported, he felt as though he had lost everything, but eventually became very much appreciative of it all as his business in Tortola continued to run as normal and he didn’t have to give up or sell any of his assets.

“But everything happen for the best, I here and my business still running, everything running as normal. I have not given up nothing or sell nothing and don’t need to sell nothing,” Mr Alphonso had told Virgin Islands News Online.

The Management and Staff of Virgin Islands News Online extend sincere condolences to the family and friends of the late Desmond Alphonso aka ‘DA’.

I feel the same way, my how people tend to forget. They tend to forget about the Jamaican guy that was found on the road crawling after he was stabbed in the chest with a steel rod or sharp pipe and told the nurse at the hospital who did it before he died?
