SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI- The long-awaited project to remove derelict vessels from the Sea Cows Bay Harbour has begun.

The Sea Cows Bay Harbour has been littered with derelict and abandoned vessels, eight years after the destructive hurricanes of 2017, Irma and Maria, struck the Virgin Islands.

According to the Virgin Islands Recovery and Development Agency (RDA), an estimated 32 vessels are to be removed from the Sea Cows Bay Harbour.

The Derelict Vessel Removal Project is being executed by Sandwise Ltd and Commercial Dive Services Ltd at a cost of $854,633.43 to the Government of the Virgin Islands.

Improving ‘visual appeal’

The RDA stated that the project will be carried out in an environmentally responsible manner, and that this cleanup will restore safe access to key hurricane anchorages, support maritime safety, and contribute to the wider effort of beautifying the Territory.

By clearing these long-standing eyesores, the project will significantly improve the visual appeal of the shoreline and enhance the overall tourism experience in the Virgin Islands, the RDA stated.

That price is pure madness. Nanny Cay resort had offered to clean up without any charges to government. Why did Govt not give them the permission?

BVI standards getting better, only 8 years to get a job done that should have been done 6-7 years ago at half the price. Keep up the good work and maybe another 5 years from now we can get Village Cay area cleaned up!

Eight years later… and only now we’re acting? We should be embarrassed. Marine life that has grown around those vessels for nearly a decade is now being disrupted and displaced. And the $27k we’re paying today? It could’ve been $5k each if we had dealt with this years ago under proper sunset legislation. This is what happens when we aren’t serious about our blue economy or tourism.

Nice the harbor is being cleaned but thought the bid was to export the boat anyone paying attention to where the boat is being disposed and what impact it have on the environment where the relevant agency to enforce the proper disposal because of who have the job no one want to challenge his wrong doings
