ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- At a time when the effects of the global economic recession is still biting and every cent counts, Delta Petroleum Limited has come up with an initiative to offer special discounts at the pump for teachers, police officers and members of the Virgin Islands Civil Servants Association (VICSA).

The company is offering 25 cents off every gallon of fuel purchased at its outlets and a further 2 cents off every dollar spent there for persons holding loyalty cards.

This was announced by the company’s Regional General Manager Bevis Sylvester during a ceremony at its Pasea outlet yesterday. “Delta petroleum is about the community, looking into the community. We just don't go out and award things or say things; we assess the situation and see where we can help.”

Mr. Sylvester explained that Delta Petroleum would help “the situation” by offering each individual that is part of the Police Welfare Association, BVI Teachers Union and VICSA, “a discount at our pumps- 25 cents off every gallon that you purchase based on the market price. That money, save it per annum, put it in a piggy bank somewhere and at the end of the year see what you have. It transforms into liquid cash immediately...You must buy gas if you have a car and because you must buy gas it is an expense that is inevitable and finished, it’s gone but here is Delta telling you that you are going to get 25 cents discount and out of every dollar that you spend with us we are still going to give you two cents back so it’s a double savings for you.”

It was also said that the ceremony is a good example of Delta's commitment to enhance community development and that teachers, police and public workers play a very important role in the community and this was Delta’s way of saying thanks to these organisations.

President of the Police Welfare Association, Duncan E. Williams, said he was grateful to Delta Petroleum for taking the initiative after much “fruitful negotiation”. “Any initiative by any of our corporate citizens to alleviate the cost of living for us the people of the Virgin Islands is a great initiative.”

President of VICSA, Stephen McMaster, emphasised on the important role that civil servants play in a society and noted that “The BVI is a Territory that is established on serving and it pleases my heart to have our association join with Delta Petroleum, whom we also recognise provides a service that facilitates from the cradle to the burial. It has been important for us as an association to restart our benefits programme, to have that incentive for public officers to continue to excel in the level of service that we provide in this Territory and while we have sought to approach businesses we are exceptionally pleased that Delta Petroleum took us and came to us and insisted that they wanted to give something back.”

He also said that VICSA was happy to partner with Delta Petroleum and to “give to our members an incentive not only for membership but to realise that there is a company in the Territory that recognises how hard our public officers work to ensure the lives of everyone in the Territory”. He reminded those in attendance that the offer was 27 cents on the gallon “because every time the card is swiped we get two cents on the dollar and 25 cents on the gallon so it goes a little bit more and we are going to hold Delta to that.”

General Secretary of the BVI Teachers Union, Tammy Henery, expressed thanks to Delta on behalf of the more than 200 members of the Union, who she said is grateful to Delta Petroleum for giving back to the people and community. “I have been taking advantage. What you pay in dues you get back in gas savings alone.”

So not only has Mr.Sylvester discrimated against people of other races in his failed election campaign but now for those customers that are not boycotting his gas station he has decided to continue with his discrimination by charging less for one set of people and a higher price for another set. Why doesnt he just give more affordable prices to all of his customers? Maybe he wants another group to boycott his gas station. For a guy that started to really pull everyone to his gas station he is quickly putting up many barriers and making people think twice about visiting his gas station.

I have been hearing the calls and was also considering boycotting Delta - but I am on board now. If you can't give us all better pricing but chose a select few then my car can guzzle someone elses gas. See ya.

To "Delta in trouble" if only now your are seeing that something is wrong, haven't you notice the decrease in person working outside & in. You have to wait so long just to get your gas, don't even mention when you go inside. In the beginning the service was great, not its gone "poooooof".

I haven't bought a drop of gas there since the 'no white man' speech and don't intend to. Racism has no place in this beautiful place.
