TRELLIS BAY, Beef Islands, VI- The BVI Airports Authority has sought to explain that the delays experienced on Monday, January 5, 2026, on flights operating from Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS) to US Mainland destinations were beyond its control.

In a notice on January 5, the BVIAA said the delays resulted primarily from air traffic flow restrictions emanating from the San Juan Area Control Centre, compounded by ongoing congestion in both the San Juan and Miami airspace.

As a result of this, most departing flights from Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport were affected. Antigua and St. Maarten airspace also experienced related disruptions.

The BVIAA stated that in some instances, aircraft were held on the ground for extended periods while passengers remained on board.

The authority also stated that operational decisions taken by the Pilot in command of the affected aircraft contributed to the delays. Such decisions fall solely under the authority of the airline and the aircraft Captain, whose paramount responsibility is always the safety and security of passengers and crew on board.

Beyond 3,500 feet San Juan provides air traffic services

The BVIAA explained that the Virgin Islands’ (VI) airspace is limited to a five nautical mile lateral radius and extends vertically up to, but not including, 3,500 feet. Beyond these limits, air traffic control services are provided by the San Juan Area Control Centre and all communications and coordination for adjacent airports and airspace within the region are routed through San Juan.

Therefore, the VI’s airspace must comply with any restrictions imposed within these control zones.

The BVIAA said that although these circumstances were outside their direct control, they acknowledged the discomfort and inconvenience that affected passengers experienced.

“The Authority regrets the challenges endured by travellers and sincerely appreciates their patience and understanding during what was an unusual and exceptional situation.”

The BVIAA added that it continues to work closely with airline partners, air navigation service providers, and regional aviation authorities to minimise disruption where possible and to ensure that passenger safety remains the highest priority at all times.

Passengers were also reminded to remain in direct contact with their respective airlines for the most current and accurate information regarding flight schedules and operations.

You "can't buy it", but you're willing to spread it? SMH.

Along with incompetent ATC and operations staff that can't handle the increased traffic and make sound decisions.
