‘Dead’ woman wakes in coffin @ her own funeral in Ecuador
According to New York Post, Bella Montoya, 76, regained consciousness during the vigil, which was held in the city of Babahoyo on Friday, June 9, 2023.
Incredible video shows medics tending to Montoya after her loved ones realised she was still alive.
She can be seen clearly breathing as she is removed from the casket and placed onto a stretcher.
“Her left hand was hitting the side of the coffin, and it was shaking,” Montoya’s son, Gilbert Balberán, told local media, according to Jam Press.
Balberán claims the wake was held just four hours after Montoya was declared dead, with a medical examiner even providing him with a death certificate.
Her son also told Ecuadorean media that she was in intensive care, but was responsive.
"My mum is on oxygen, her heart is stable. The doctor pinched her hand and she reacted, they tell me that's good because it means she is reacting little by little," newspaper El Universo quoted him as saying.
Bella Montoya is not the only person to "come alive" after being officially declared dead.
In February, an 82-year-old woman was found to be breathing while lying in a funeral home in New York State. She had been pronounced dead three hours earlier at a nursing home.
Ecuador's health ministry has set up a committee to investigate the incident.
