DDM monitoring 2 tropical depressions in Atlantic

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Department of Disaster Management (DDM) says it is monitoring two tropical waves in the Atlantic that could become tropical cyclones as they move westward across the Atlantic.

Tropical Depression Joyce

At 5:00 AM today, September 30, 2024, the centre of Tropical Depression Joyce was located near latitude 22.1 North, longitude 49.7 West, according to the National Hurricane Centre.  The depression is moving toward the west near 2 mph (4 km/h), and a turn toward the northwest and north is expected during the next day or so.

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph (55 km/h) with higher gusts. Weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Joyce is likely to become a post-tropical remnant low later today and dissipate by Wednesday, the NHC added.

Tropical Depression 12

At 5:00 AM, the centre of Tropical Depression Twelve was located near latitude 14.0 North, longitude 34.1 West. The depression is moving toward the west near 8 mph (13 km/h), and a general westward to west-northwestward motion is expected to continue through Tuesday. A gradual turn to the northwest is forecast by Wednesday.

According to the NHC, maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph (55 km/h) with higher gusts.

Steady strengthening is forecast, and the depression is likely to become a hurricane by Tuesday night or Wednesday. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1005 mb (29.68 inches).

According to DDM, on its current track Tropical Depression 12 is not expected to be a threat to the Territory.
