ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The debate probably still rages on as to which tart is the best; however, in the meantime, Dawnalee Stevens-Hodge has been declared the best when it comes to making coconut tarts.

Stevens-Hodge was declared the winner by a panel of eight judges when Caribbean Insurers Limited (CIL) held its Coconut Tart Competition at Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park on Friday, November 24, 2023.

There were some 22 entries in the competition.

Stevens-Hodge won the top prize of $250.00 and plenty of bragging rights.

Alric Smith aka ‘Doughboy’ placed second and pocketed $150.00 while Shirlyn Farrington and Jennifer Bertie were tied for third place, having the same number of points. The third place prize was $100.00.

The tarts were judged on presentation, taste, and texture.

CIL impressed with participation

Director of CIL Mrs Simone T. Montsanto said the event was a success and that she was “impressed” with the number of participants.

“It was a fun community event that suits the season,” Mrs Montsanto told Virgin Islands News Online.

“It’s the most debated tart on social media,” she added.

Mrs Montsanto noted too that CIL is now focused on its Traditional Christmas Cake from Around the World Competition scheduled for Christmas in the City on Saturday, December 2, 2023.

Some 20 entries have been received for that competition.

The top prize is $350.00.

I was amused to read the above article on Tarts. In my country a tart is a skimpily dressed female usually offering services for a fee. While First class tarts are expensive, second class tarts should be avoided at all costs.

So I did some research and yes in the 19 century tart was used as a slang… but the pastry had the name first.. So I hope this info helps to settle your amusement????…

You are a real jackas*! Later when you brush your teeth before going to bed, look straight ahead and you will recognise the real tart. If you don't get it ask your father, he banged that tart.

Wrong winner that your opinion. That's why the judges were only given numbers instead of names.

@ coconut. We all know what a tart was so many years ago. You know for many many years now, a tart is a fruit pie. Be nice please. Congratulations to all entrants.
