WEST END, Tortola, VI- Word just reaching our newsroom is that residents of the First District have had enough of being affected by the almost daily landfill fires at Pockwood Pond and are planning to stage a peaceful protest outside of the House of Assembly in Road Town this morning, April 17, 2023.

The recalled Fifth Sitting of the Fifth Session of the Fourth House of Assembly (HoA) is scheduled for 10:00 AM, and aims to validate the grant of Residence and Belonger Certificates of some Six-hundred and eighty-eight (688) persons.

According to reports reaching our newsroom, the First District residents are also seeking to sign a petition to pressure Government to urgently address the issue at the Pockwood Pond incinerator.

A fire at the incinerator in February 2021, rendered the facility inoperable since, and open burning is now frequent.

Residents of the First District are said to be the most affected by the smoke and dust. Many are concerned that their health is being impacted negatively.

A large landfill fire was seen last night and continues to burn today, sending plumes of smoke in the direction of West End, Romney Park and even Carrot Bay.

General Election is Monday, April 24, 2023; however, the frustrated residents of the First District are not waiting another day to collectively let their voices be heard on the urgent issue of the frequent landfill fires at Pockwood Pond.

More details to follow.

The recalled but impotent HOA meets today with an alleged 'peaceful' protest by D1 constituents. The protest will not be peaceful because the HOA members will be 'smoked' out of their meeting just like the D1 residents are in western Tortola. Today just may go down in BVI history and become a national holiday(The Great Burnout Protest or 2023?) in another 30 years or so!

My God, it took a whole ELECTION for people to protest? Don't they see that that debacle is a serious health hazard to folks in the First District? It was as if there was a natural fire in my house today. What a shame! And yes, both VIP, NDP I and II, and part of PVIM are to blame for inaction. So all of you need just STOP blaming everyone else and point the finger at yourselves. Politicians just do not care about people anymore, as long as they can line the pockets of family and friends, they are good. They lie too D@*M much, till they have convinced themselves that they are telling the truth.

People will protest, politicians will make their usual promises, and some who make these promises will be fortunate to get elected. The noise will cool down and it WILL BE business as usual. I can put my neck on a chopping block for this one.

They just need to move that mess out of WEST END.

The protest is understandable but makes no sense at this time. I have listen to HOA for a few years now since NDP eight consecutive years time when Ronnie was the Minister of Health. This is why I maintain the COI was a well organized targeting assignment & not about good governance. The COI did not touch the purchase of a new incinerator by the NDP costing millions of dollars which was supposed to ensure open burning was a thing of the past but the new multimillion incinerator came without all the parts especially something called a scrubber which would have taken care of this open burning problem. This left all governments in a bad position as to this date they cannot get the rest parts for the incinerator. Just like the $8mill plane, our money gone but nothing to show for it. This is past criminal.

This issue needs addressing but I must say to blame the VIP who took office in 2019 for every issue and expect them to have fixed them in 4 years is a far stretch especially knowing covid took up most of 3 years and nearly all resources to keep us alive as well as the economy. Added to covid was dealing with all the damages from Irma and Maria that were not addressed by the last government. I am not a VIP supporter but I try to be fair and in doing so I cannot join those who want to forget what they had to face and still facing and ignore these factors and pretend as if everything was normal.

You are so correct. Maybe if the VIP did not act in the time of crisis specifically covid then the health officials projection of 5000 people being infected with covid and died would definitely have happened. Our blame for the VIP would have been worse or not at all as most of us would be dead now. Let us not turn into a set of ungrateful people and forget what we were saved from as hind sight is always 20/20.

While I agree with part of your argument, that the incinerator was purchased without the scrubber, the current party, promised they would purchase and have it installed on numerous occasions, don't tell me that they did not have the funds, there was millions apon millions that was given away to friends & family. So they need to Standup like big men/women, and shoulder the blame. I was taught to under promise and over deliver they did the opposite.

I agree with hmmmmm. It needs fixing but no government in the world could have projected covid and its fall out would happen which caused a lot of the promises to have to be adjusted. Let us not forget this as it is real and it happened. The effects are still being felt especially by those of us who loss loved one.
    • I agree...give VIP their credit as well (17/04/2023, 12:02) Like (20) Dislike (16) Reply

We all are in full support this issue needs addressing but the protest should be where ever NDP 1 & NDP 2 (Now PVIM) members are today and until elections because their members who sat in government have to explain how millions of our tax dollars purchased a non functional incinerator. DO NOT FORGET NOR OVER LOOK THIS FACT!!!

When will the purchase of the incinerator which never worked and the purchase of the planes which never came, be looked into. It is interesting the Governor has not seen it fit to push these robberies rather than the foolishness he is doing.

In the BVI only when the status quo and their paid loud mouth supporters hate you, even if you are doing good for the masses, is when there seems to have balance. In the BVI once you are loved then you are always sin free and known as a good person. This is why the plane & incinerator purchase is getting a free pass because of who is involved.

Time to balance the laws. Any country that has any leader above the law and instead have them being the law is a country under a dictatorship. Currently the President of America and former President have to answer questions about concerns raised about their questionable actions. The system and not "a one man" or "a small group of senior public Officers" will determine the process and outcome. However in the 21st century the Governor of the UK is above the law and will become the law by suspending a constitution and run a country how they see fit through two orders in council. This is dictatorship. In the 21st century when the Governor alone can call a COI & determine the terms of reference and the Commissioner for the COI and the staff is dictatorship. To add insult to injury that no one can call a COI on him or have him looked into as he alone is over the police force and audit and he alone can call a COI. THIS IS DICTATORSHIP!!! In the 21st century when a Governor can fail the police force especially in terms of development of the human capital & fail the public service but have these and more failures and questionable actions covered up by high handed actions geared at showing the apparent failure of others is not democracy but dictatorship. If the president of the USA is allowed to be held accountable by the law and the people then so can the Governor and the those UK senior public Officials over the Governor. Let us stop letting them play games with our minds and our future. It is time for balance. It is time for fairness. It is time to eliminate this kind of double standards. There should not be any discrepancy between how leaders are handled by the law and the judiciary and audit and the overall system.

I am for the actions but Ronnie, Myron & Kedrick should not be given a free pass. Either they get back our money or get the company to fix the incinerator so it can function properly & avoid this open burning & constant break down.

It will be a mistake to get rid of the VIP. The opposition are using every tactic possibly to discredit the VIP. Lots can’t handle that Mr. Wheatley will be premier(aka crazy bat Cindy) …I listened to here on tola radio and it’s clear her problem with Wheatley is personal… but I will not be fooled by her or any other. I remember when NDP had the country in a messy seeing out to the rich ect. I got one so not want a repeat .
