Customer dishonestly changes cake price @ RiteWay; Fined $1,500
Prosecutors said Jeffers and Akil Turnbull, who was also charged for the same offence but pleaded not guilty, along with two underage boys, removed the price label on an $80 cake and exchanged it with a price label on another cake valued at $24.
Jeffers then headed for the cashier and left with the cake.
The youngsters were later seen on surveillance footage by the supermarket’s Information Technologist, who then reported the matter to police.
‘You should have known better’
Before handing down her sentence on Wednesday, September 25, 2019, Magistrate Ayanna O. Baptiste-DaBreo said being part of a family business, Jeffers should have known to do better.
Jeffers, who was unrepresented, pleaded with the court for mercy.
“I am not proud because I grew up knowing better,” she said, adding that she was yielding to peer pressure and just “goofing off” to see if they could get away with the act.
“I just wanted to see what would happen, I ask for some leniency,” she said.
Apart from the fine, the youngster was told to repay RiteWay the balance of $56 for the cake.
In the meantime, Turnbull is scheduled to make his second appearance for the start of his trial on October 17, 2019, along with the minors who were also jointly charged with the offence.
