BAUGHER'S BAY, Tortola, VI- Activist and political candidate Mrs Shaina M. Smith-Archer says the challenges of today’s Virgin Islands are really about nation-building amidst the conversation of direct rule and more self-determination.

Smith-Archer was at the time guest hosting the Tuesday, May 24, 2022, edition of Claude O. Skelton-Cline’s Honesty Speaking radio show.

The conversation comes as Virgin Islanders and regional leaders have been advocating for no UK direct rule, which was recommended in a Commission of Inquiry (CoI) report.

“To me, the crux of the matter is everything that we are seeing and discussing is about nation-building, so whether we call it direct rule, that's only one aspect of it,” she said.

More knowledge needed

“Because then it goes back to the whole notion of a question that was put to me a few weeks back. Aren't we already are self-governing country, or self-sustaining and I started to explain to them that you know there are some definitions that we have lost or not aware of,” she added.

Smith-Archer said while words like self-determination, and self-governing have been continuously thrown around, no one has paused long enough to explain exactly what does that mean to the man on the street.

For the grassroots population, she added that persons are left to question why they should care when hearing words like decolonisation.

“One of the things that’s been in my heart these past few months is that you know, for a lack of knowledge, people perish,”

She added that in the VI, persons cannot talk about the way forward for territory until the people have some knowledge.”

“And in that knowledge get some understanding, so that we can make wise decisions because without, we definitely are going to perish.”

Dear Shaina , I've seen you campaigning to be elected in several elections now. I admire your persistence. You seem like a good person to me. Given the crop that's in it, I think the VI people could do worse than elect you. On the critical side, the reportage you attract usually quotes you talking in mind-numbing banalities. In this instance "nation building". Let's be honest, that's a buzz term that means nothing concrete. One punter's "nation building" is 'deport 'em all'. Another punter's "nation building" is 'rights for all'. Good luck in the election. You deserve to win at this stage, I think...

This is one confused young woman that would say and do anything to be elected. Truth is, she is not a leader, nor is K&&&&a or C&&&y. We need true leaders at this juncture my People. Not one of these women can show a successful project they have led or participated in. They continually act out their circumstances emotionally and publicly and are just seeking to get their hands on the government purse. Their sole purpose is to bring our information, but don't look to them to fix any or to lead.

Let's look around our Community for the men and women that are quietly running successful businesses without looking for the spotlight. Their accomplishments speak for them. These are our true leaders; let's approach them!

Anyone going on this show is compromising themselves and will lack credibility going forward.

She is not a natural people person and comes across as fake. That is always a deficit in politics.

Look around! There is nithing to point to to confirm growth and development of these islands despite the exhorbitant amount of money spent by BVI goverment. The bulk of the money goes into people's pockets. Financial services is controlled by foreigners and BVI goverments had made it easy for them to do so without stepping foot in the BVI. No meaningful restrictions. BVI is revolving door and the white ones at the law firms and trust companies are paid salaries they could not even dream of in the UK. Yet they remain silent when BVI is being bashed in the international stage. Tourism? There is nothing for the tourist. No imagination from tourist board. You want to be elected? Let me hear your VISION. What will change? How will the TERRITORY benefit. Financial services. How do you ensure control is placed in the hands of the people of the Territory so our children will be more than corporate administrators; our lawyers don't have to look to outside agencies to help them find employment in their territory. What is your plan?

How wrong you are with this comment "....the white ones at the law firms and trust companies are paid salaries they could not even dream of in the UK." Qualified lawyers, accountants, etc. are only paid the same amount that they would be paid anywhere else in the world as an ex-pat. Similarly qualified BVIslanders would also be equally remunerated as ex-pats in those locations.

@once again there’s no plan. You realize up to know Cindy, Shanana, Kishma even pico moff never actually produced a plan? Right now all Cindy is concerned about is putting people who work hard to be where they are out of work.

Each week she’s calling for a certain part of government to be dismissed. They she wants all those people to vote for she like really?

Correct me if I am wrong but Kishma and Pick Moff made it clear that they are not running.

any ideas of ever getting elected or appointed to any position in the BVI government. Your best bet is to move to another BOT and start all over. Unfortunately your despicable reputation will proceed you. But you can fool some of the people some of the time but not all the people all the time.

I support anyone that's going to throw their hat in the ring for leadership positions in the BVI.

It's a daunting task, and should not be taken lightly

To bash any person' for just even trying, and not offering up of any services to help our country, is just not fair.

Congrats, Mrs. Smith- Archer for your continued persistence..
