PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has said that the time is now for the people of the Virgin Islands to decide on the amount of risk that they are willing to accept and allow in the face of mounting debt and low revenue brought on by COVID-19 over the last year and a half.

Premier Fahie was referring to the British Virgin Islands Port Authority (BVIPA)’s debt for the construction of the C. B. Romney Tortola Pier Park project and the general economy of the territory.

“If we miss this industry this year and next year, somebody has to finance the Port’s loan that they had long before I reach, about $50 million I think it is now. Somebody has to find that money and not just for the loan; we are not talking about the rest money that is needed to keep people employed. So this is not something for persons to get emotional about,” he told taxi and tour operators on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, during an emergency meeting at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College in Paraquita Bay.

The meeting was to determine the way forward with the cruise industry and to gauge how stakeholders felt about the territory allowing cruise passengers who have been fully inoculated to enter without being tested for the deadly virus.

The cruise industry has made their position clear that they won't be making calls to the Virgin Islands if that protocol is not relaxed and choose other destinations with fewer protocols.

Following the meeting, the government has to make a decision that must be relayed to the cruise industry by today, Thursday, September 2, 2021.

We need money

“We can’t keep shutting down every time something happens we are going to be stone-cold broke because all the revenue generators are down and while, I don’t want to say it to saying that I am insensitive to COVID-19, but we have to decide how we are going to balance this,” Premier stated.

He said the risk of contracting COVID-19 from carriers on cruise ships are smaller given the timeframe that the cruise passengers are going to be on the ground.

Tourism has been severely impacted for the past year and a half because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Damn if you do. Damn if you dont.. The biggest opposition to this move are your own Civil servants Andrew.. They think because they getting their full salary every fort night and living well that all is well, dont care about nothing or anyone else..They need to know when the well run dries which its all most, even their Jobs will be at risk...I trust the cruiseship to be responsible, they are responsible, We also have to be responsible for our own safety.

Everyone here has had the opportunity for vaccination which is proven to keep you out of the hospital. Why should we allow the economy to further suffer to protect people who do not wish to protect themselves. We are effectively being held to ransom by a bunch of anti science fools the longer we go on without fully opening up.

You are exactly right. Dumb anti science primitives are holding the country to ransom. If vaccinated you have nothing much to fear. So what are the cavemen afraid of?.

For the love of ……… who are these people? After what we have seen and lived through, you mean to tell me the people running the Port Authority still think we are going back to what was. They should have been figuring out the NEXT and diversify this product long time. You are putting your faith in an industry they themselves aren’t sure what their future is. Jeeze!

You are correct. In the latest news now, Carnival canceling rest of the year because of OUTBREAK ON CRUISE SHIP. Guess what ALL ARE FULLY VACCINATED!!! Now what will you all say???More BS talk...''oh at least they wont be hospitalized or dead....WRONG AGAIN.... ALL of you who vaccinated should be afraid...Be very afraid.
Stop putting your faith in a FICKLE INDUSTRY who don't know their tomorrow or next month. You should've been focusing on AGRICULTURE instead of money dishing out to persons what didn't even plant a tomato, but collected big check.

All those businesses with abovd 80% Fully vax staff. Mark and or publish their business publicly in a leave -let as "Fully Vax" Give the tourist an informed choice.....We have to move the country forward,.. .Freedom of choice..

True, the covid-19 virus has largely taken its toll on our economy. But also have financial mismanagement, biasness, envy, pride jealousy, eletism, separatist, and suchlikes behaviours are the core center of our in-depth financial troubles.
It is of a truth that the current Administration should not be viewed as the only one that deserves the blame for the financial meagerness of our economy, all previous governments are GUILTY, in my opinion., Honestly.

The response is not a well favored one but who is in the kitchen feels the heat. Many are in the kitchen feeling the heat let's hope they don't get burn. We have to live with feeling the heat just like living with covid.

The heat can kill you and covid can kill you so pick your choice. Precautions may save you but at what expense. Things to ponder.

If we think covid going anywhere now we are making a big mistake.
It will be interesting to know what the ships require from other countries before they can make decisions to set sail. While we need them we don't need any negative energy from them either.
One thing to note don't care what they come up with the BVI will stand. We will not go under no matter how bleakly it looks.

Cruise is not the only way to travel. Out tourism product needs more marketing and needs to be attractive. When one door close many more will open. Limitations yes new ways let's invest in our own ships. BVI have wealth target our own then head out to rest of the Caribbean and keep moving forward it's an expensive venture but it can happen. Let's Think big stepping outside the box.

You sound as dumb as @Lucifer. The EUA's are not effective against variants. The efficacy is waning earlier than expected. The best immunity has been proven to be natural immunity. But carry on with the blame game and the dumb talk. The hundreds of thousands of breakthrough cases say differently to what you're saying now. Even cruise lines recanted their talks about only vaccinated persons can travel with them. So I hope you are aware that vaccinated or unvaccinated, let persons in without testing and we are ALL in the same boat.
      • Lucifer (03/09/2021, 08:07) Like (2) Dislike (0) Reply
You have faith in your immune system so maybe you should volunteer to go work with the sick at Peebles. Im sure the people that were admitted there thought that they had strong natural immune systems. Those that have lost family members or are now suffering long covid may beg to differ with your assessment that 'natural' immunity is the best immunity.
Also how many breakthrough cases are leading to hospitalisation?

Why is the premier talking like this isn't a done deal?

At least past education minister had the balls to tell is our opinions don't matter when he thinks he's right.

Also let's remember that the cruise industry has been selfish through this pandemic. When things were closing down, for the sake of money, many cruiseliners tried to set sail and ended up getting hundreds of people stranded at sea when countries were closing down. When they finally found a port to accept them many ships were riddled with COVID. People died for the sake of a dollar when they denied reality.

I'm for the ships coming back because I think we shouldn't have locked down in the first place. Our economy has been suffering and the biggest predictor of crime is inequality. We need to get people working again. A world of haves and havenots with no way to become a have is one no one can safely enjoy.

On the other hand...I think asking for a rapid test is a fair ask. I don't think we should trust a crippled industry trying to keep and attract investors to look out for us. We're a small place and they see us as interchangeable. Half of the reason this is even a problem is because of the rhetoric going on in these tourists home country. They aren't opposed due to scientific data but rather effective propaganda and the insistence that the rest of the world should confirm woth their view of things.

If the 40 mil from BVISSB for COVID relief was spent in a proper manner we wouldn't be here with this now. Good luck!

@Lucifer. You chose the right name to hide under. More like @$$ifer though. Because you sound stupid. It has nothing to do with the unvaccinated. The vaccinated can acquire, get sick from, pass on and die from covid you idiot. So stupid. The vaccine is proven to prevent hospitalization? What's your evidence of that? Regardless, Astrazeneca is NOT effective against the variants that are out now. Have you had your booster? I wish I could see the face behind the retarded comment. Lord have mercy on this place.

The cruise ship industry almost collapsed, last year, because of how hard it is to keep guests from contracting Covid. They have waged a bitter fight with Florida Governor DeSantis, to enforce their policy of requiring vaccination and testing, because they know they can't survive otherwise. So, I think it is fair to assume that their guests will be as safe as any others, if not more so. Let them come in without testing.....if it doesn't work, the cruise ships will be the first to know and will stop operating. There is no way that the cruise industry will be able to function, if it's ships get infested with positive cases, much less infect the countries they visit. They are betting that they can succeed. Let them try, and if they can't, they won't be coming here, anyway.

But, in fairness, if the cruise ship visitors are allowed in, then those with whom they interact, such as the taxi drivers, must be vaccinated, as a back-stop for all of US. It is ridiculous that we allow them to hold the country hostage with their unwillingness to vaccinate. Same with the health industry and Government workers. And, if we do all these things, then we can treat other visitors the same way. We will have a healthy, prosperous result. Anything else is doomed to fail.

Demand. Humm it is people decision to vaccinate or not to vaccinate until we get that in our heads then you will understand.
Cruise ship don't want to be retested but everyone else must be tested on this end.

All that we have worked so hard to control is now at steak because of the green back paper high demands OTHERWISE they not coming.

So here we go open up the territory fully stop wasting time and useless energy trying to control people movement.

People just need to follow the protocols and we will be fine. We have to live with this thing. Don't fool your self

Open up and buck the agenda. The global powers don’t want cruise ships and travel for pleasure to exist. In the name of climate change they want to restrict movement for everyone but themselves as they fly on their private jets to the lands they are buying up all over the world while restricting development in all countries. They want land and resources.
Do your research. Dig deep. Wake the F up before it’s too late.
