Crowd gathers for 'Hands off our Commissioner' protest
Residents are protesting the recent decision by Governor Daniel Pruce to demote Acting Commissioner of Police Jacqueline E. Vanterpool to her position as Deputy Commissioner of Police.
The protest was scheduled to begin at 3:30 PM to allow public servants to attend.
Ms Vanterpool, who has been Acting CoP for just over a year, had submitted her application for the position and went through the interview process. However, Governor Pruce decided not to confirm her as CoP, instead opting for the United Kingdom national Richard Ullger as the nominee for CoP.
Standing up for Jackie
Calls came from various members of the Virgin Islands community for this protest action. Bishop John I. Cline, one of the organisers of the protest, told our news centre on November 8, 2025, that Ms Vanterpool has what it takes to be CoP and has demonstrated that during her tenure as Acting CoP.
"To remove her without cause or without a reason to her or the public or to the government, I believe that is something we should stand up against," he said.
Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) and Minister for Communications and Works, Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5), had publicly voiced support for the public's gathering today.
Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) will bring updates from the protest as they become available.
