Crisis Communications training for BVITB’s industry partners

Deputy Director of the BVI Tourist Board, Ms Malcia Smith-Hamilton said some of the topics to be covered at the workshop would be how to communicate effectively without messages being taken out of context, how to be able to tell your story without solely depending on the media, how to use the internet effectively to communicate messages, strategies of averting a crisis, just to name a few. ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The British Virgin Islands Tourist Board (BVITB) seems to be making every effort to strengthen the industry from every possible angle and soon a number of its industry partners will benefit from a crisis communications workshop.

Deputy Director of the BVI Tourist Board, Ms Malcia Smith-Hamilton said it’s the first of such workshops targeting specifically industry partners.

The key facilitator for the workshop will be Caribbean Tourism Organization specialist Johnson Johnrose and, according to Ms Smith-Hamilton, there is a unique line-up of topics that will be covered over the two days, June 19 - 20, 2013.

"Some of the topics would be how to communicate effectively without your message being taken out of context, how to be able to tell your story without solely depending on the media, how to use the internet effectively to communicate messages, strategies of averting a crisis, just to name a few," Ms Smith-Hamilton told Virgin islands News Online.

According to the BVITB, the question of crisis communication is often raised during times of “crisis” when unwanted attention can bring negative impacts to a country’s image, which is it’s most valuable asset.

"As a result, it’s important to equip persons with the knowledge and information needed to respond to the global media on scenarios caused by natural disasters, crime, accidents or social issues,” the BVITB had said in a recent release.

The workshop is designed to ensure tourism stakeholders are vigilant with their flow of communication. “You may not be able to prevent a crisis, but your response will determine whether the situation is made worse or if your country’s reputation survives,” Mr Johnrose had said in a release.

Mr Johnrose will advise attendees on how to develop and deliver strong messages, communicate effectively, prepare for interviews, respond to journalists, prevent a collapse in communications, and communicate like a professional.

Throughout the workshop, participants will also examine the differences between preparation versus reaction with each day consisting of at least three practical sessions and simulation based on actual events.

The Crisis Communications Workshop is a comprehensive two-day workshop created to provide participants with the maximum amount of instruction and guidance. Prior registration is a requirement and it covers both days.

How she going be director when she can't even be deputy director tourist board is just a waste of time now because of politics and the sooner the government put people in place who can do the work instead of doing favors then we would be able to move forward with tourism and start making money again!!

If she had applied she might have gotten the job. Present employees HAVE THE FIRST option to apply for any job open at the BVITB. If she did not apply how could she even be considered.
