HUNTUM'S GHUT, Tortola, VI- Virgin Islands Governor Daniel Pruce has stated that strategies to strengthen the fight against crime in the Virgin Islands (VI) are being developed.

He made this announcement during the Launch and Youth Rally of the 2025 Virgin Islands Anti-Crime Summit, which took place on Friday, August 15, 2025.

Governor Pruce expressed, “It's truly inspiring to see so many young people here today. All of you, united against crime. This evening marks a moment of reflection. We've just had a moment of silence, and it’s also a time for resolve and shared responsibility. It shows that throughout the Virgin Islands, we care deeply about the safety and future of our young people.”

The governor acknowledged the challenges the community faces, stating, “Unfortunately, we are all too familiar with crime and violence—burglaries, robberies, and organised criminal gangs that target vulnerable youth, especially boys from disrupted homes or those on the fringes of the educational system.”

Collective action against crime

Governor Pruce called for a collective willingness in the Virgin Islands to take action against crime, asserting that recognising these issues and standing here together is a demonstration of a united commitment to taking action.

"We say enough is enough...As governor, I have a constitutional responsibility for security in the Virgin Islands. The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force is at the heart of this effort. My vision and commitment to everyone is to ensure the RVIPF is as successful as possible—a properly resourced, highly professional, and fully vetted police force that earns the trust and confidence of all citizens in the Virgin Islands.”

The Governor also mentioned his responsibility for the Department of Health, overseeing the prison system, which is increasingly focused on rehabilitation alongside its role as a correctional facility.

He emphasized, “We cannot arrest and imprison our way out of these problems; we need the entire government and civil society to be part of the solution.”

Initiatives to combat crime

The Governor highlighted several initiatives that have been implemented to combat crime, which include a change in the way the National Security Council operates, enhanced ability to engage with partners for strategic discussions to see the bigger picture, and working to address the  power of education in reducing criminality.

He further stated, “Above all, we need to engage the community because our collective security is rooted in it. Strong families and robust community networks—including churches, mentors, and schools—are vital. All of this strengthens when we work together. Government, law enforcement, educators, faith leaders, and citizens must collaborate to build a society where every young person feels safe, supported, and valued.”

The Anti-Crime Summit, a brainchild of the Virgin Islands Premier, Dr. the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), will take place from September 24-26, 2025.

You all need to stop pushing this fake narrative. What’s the point of hosting workshops and discussions about building a better community, then still granting licenses to promoters who bring in artists that only glorify negativity?

Take for example Mr. Mobile Fish’s flyer — look at it closely. How many of those artists are actually sending a positive message? Spice? Teaching what — how to “sink out mi pum pum”? Vybz? 450? Who are we really learning from here?

This isn’t about the older generation — it’s about the youth. You have a panel discussion at 9:00am about crime, then by 10:00pm you’re promoting an artist draped in 50 gold chains bragging about the “keys” he just dropped off. That’s hypocrisy at the highest level.

Come on, stop the madness. Right now, drugs, money, and sex dominate the culture in the BVI — and if you doubt it, just step into almost any bar and you’ll see it firsthand.

Thank, so far, Governor, Daniel Pruce for this good intentions preached in reference to crime fighting, be you reminded, if you didn't know, that crimes began from top, the evil one, and his demonic recruits, to adult humans, and past on to their offsprings, (youths). So, of you are really serious about curbing crimes, and helping the youth, as you said, you must start by targeting the root causes.
Many who we sometimes overlooked as helpful: Example, most religious organizations, and other social recognized organizations, not shown on the radar, so to speak, also are involved in criminals actions, though uncovered, and legally exempted. A long journey from point A to Z begins with a first step in the right direction
back to God our Creator, and to the youths.

"Train up a child (children) in the way they should go, and when (if they live long enough to get old) they will not depart from it."

We either truly invest in fighting crime or we don’t, that fight might end up at the doors of some influential people on this island, but is that the reason not to do what’s right? As the old saying goes ‘if you ain’t with us, you are against us’, so in crime terms, you either want to fight it or you are happy to let it go unchecked. Let’s see which way our politicians jump…….
