COVID-19: WHO lists South Africa's Omicron strain as 'concerning'

GENEVA, Switzerland - A new strain of the COVID-19 arising from South Africa is causing worldwide alarm and has led to dozens of countries restricting travel from the continent.

The countries' actions are aimed at diminishing the spread of the variant, named B.1.1.529 or Omicron, which the World Health Organization has deemed a strain of concern.

The new strain has more than 50 mutations compared with the original virus first identified in Wuhan, China in 2019, according to South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases.

More than 30 of those mutations are in the spike protein, through which the Covid-19 virus attaches to human cells. Additionally, several of the more than 30 spike proteins appear to be new, while others are already known to make the virus more contagious.

The new variant has led to a stock market selloff and has also prompted some airlines to cancel flights.

Data from South Africa's communicable disease institute shows how quickly the new variant sidelined the highly transmissible Delta variant in just two weeks, and now makes up about 90 percent of infections in the country's capital cities of Pretoria and Johannesburg.

The new variant has also been detected in Botswana and in a traveler coming from South Africa in Hong Kong, according to the Wall Street Journal. Israel, one of the countries that restricted travel from southern Africa, said Friday it had identified the B.1.1.529 variant in a traveler from Malawi and was investigating whether it had also infected two others, WSJ reported.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said Friday, “Our highest principle currently is to act fast, strong and now,” adding that the country was on the verge of another stage of emergency.

I've said it over and over, they will never stop until they can pin the virus on Africa. They will never stop until they can Vindicate China and World health organization for the invention of Covid 19 virus. We all know that Covid 19 came created from a Lab in Wuhan China, covered up by World health Organization. Now where this one in Africa came from. Who created it. ? Since Trump left no one has the courage to call out China and World health organization for their evil acts. I must say Australia been trying to call them out but they get no support. The rest of the world is in bed With Bill Gates....I can bet my life if Trump was in Power Covid would have already been a thing of the past...

Unfortunately I think you’re right. And unfortunately because so many people world wide haven’t had access to vaccines, and too many of those who have had access have refused vaccination based on disinformation and misinformation and fears.

The more unvaccinated persons that catch it the more variants. You are the cause of your own conspiracy at this point. While you all wait to seen vaccinated persons get ill you're causing more variants

I knew this cment was coming.

All over the world the place that are doing the worse are the places with high vaccine rate.

Naturally viruses mutate on their own. Typically they don't mutate to get deadlier since a dead host means a dead virus as well. Vaccinated people can catch the virus. Mutations have a chance of occuring during transmission. South Africa has the highest vaccination rate of all the african countries and is now responsible for two variants. The Beta variants which alos csme from SA mutsted at a time when there were no vaccines. So I think it's safe to say it's unfair to blame the unvaxxed for this.

Meanwhile the Delta variant originated from India and they seem to be managing well. Collapsed their delta wave in two weeks while the US and Europe are still battling theirs. I wondee why that is.

People should stop gluing their eyee to the tv and go live. As long as you give the government and media power they will milk this for what it's worth.

Get your facts straight, This variant was discovered in south africa in 4 vaccinated persons, but the globalist is doing there usual evil to push there agenda.Anything that transpired in vaccinated persons are hidden or else it would hamper there vaccine drive.

OMICRON seems to be an anagram for MORONIC.
Maybe because it's moronic to still believe the thing they are telling us.

This plandemic to usher in the New World order is driven by fear. By putting fear into populations they are able to have them unknowingly surrender to the narrative. I am convinced that the so called new variant is nothing more than a ploy to herd people to take the boosters. If you have been following the narrative Africa with the least vaccinated population has been doing the best in terms of infection rate. Europe and America have seen very high infection rates in spite of the fact that they are among the most highly vaccinated. I am beginning to think that the vaccine drives the virus as part of the depopulation strategy. With Africa being the main focus of the depopulation strategy a more localized threat is necessary to herd the population to the vaccine. More money for the pharma and more infections and death. They are also pushing for the cape province to become a separate nation where they can leverage power like Israel in the Middle East and Taiwan and South Korea in Asia. The world is at the brink of the most serious confrontation ever and its gonna be unspeakably horrible. All foolishly driven by race fear and greed.
