DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI– Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) has detailed the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic deaths in the Virgin Islands and said everyone needs to remain vigilant to ensure the territory does not return to such a situation.

37 persons have lost their lives to COVID-19 in the VI, 36 of which were in 2021 during a record surge of active cases in June-July.

Hon Malone, at yesterday's August 12, 2021, Eleventh Sitting of the Third Session of the Fourth House of Assembly, said in one instance a mother was burying three of her children as a result of the pandemic.

“I witnessed and I have been in attendance, whether by virtual or presence, to the funerals of some of our dearly departed.  A mother putting to rest three of children, our friends, our brothers, our sisters,” he said.

Hon Malone said the reality of the deaths surrounding the pandemic was parents were burying children or children burying parents, brothers, and sisters and other relatives.

No time for relaxation - Hon Malone

“Mr Speaker, despite the fact that our positive cases have drastically been reduced, this is no time for relaxation. We have to keep pressing forward and ensure a steady decline in our active cases now and beyond because we cannot afford another surge,” Hon Malone said.

While active infections have significantly dropped to less than 50 after reaching 1600 plus cases in July, Hon Malone said the territory cannot afford to lose anyone else to the dreaded disease and they cannot afford the impact on lives and livelihoods.

“I remain optimistic, but I am reminded and must remind everyone that we are not out of the woods, far from it. Vigilance only is the keyword. Our key messaging strategy remains unchanged, we are living in a new norm it is no longer business as usual,” Hon Malone reminded.

COVID-19 reaping havoc globally

The Health Minister said regionally and internationally, COVID-19 is reaping havoc in communities and the territory must take steps to protect against the virus.

“We need to continue to police ourselves, we have to stop and curtail the undesirable behaviours that make us vulnerable to this virus. The onus is on each and every one of us to take a personal and civic responsibility to protect ourselves, our families, and our communities,” he said.

Hon Malone called on persons to be their ‘brother’s keeper,’ and to vaccinate and follow the public health measures.

“If we see each other slipping we need to give gentle reminders and words of encouragement because we have all seen what this virus can do,” he said.

0.00025% chanceof dying from Astra Zeneca in the beginning now at 0.00001% take that against Covid in the BVI , last outbreak you had a 5% chance of catching it and a 2.5% chance od dying if you caught it , well if you were unvaccinated that is. The unvaccinated will die again when not if the Delta variant arrives so if there are 14,000 people unvaccinated and if the outbreak is the 5 times (delta variant) then the unvaccinated people will be responsible for 150 more deaths in the territory, so chose not for yourself if your healthy and fit but for your family, loved ones, friends, the territory....

If the government had stick with the usual protocols maybe we wouldn't have had so many deaths.
You all let in those tourist who are vaccinated, forgetting that they are also carriers and they can spread the virus to anyone. The protocols should have always been the same from day one.

Why do we blame the Government for something that is the people’s responsibility. Must our Government walk behind each and every one of us to make sure we are wearing our masks correctly, practicing social distancing, washing our hands and sanitizing when we are unable to wash our hands? We dropped the ball on ourselves. We are responsible for our actions. So sick and tired of always passing the buck rather than take responsibility. Our Government is doing all they can to keep us safe. We are irresponsible.

It is the unvaccinated that are at fault. The government has tried and tried to encourage people to get vaccinated. More will die and it is totally preventable. Even Delta has a .01% chance of a vaccinated person being hospitalized.

Please tell the truth! Tell the people what is happening in Israel as you post this. How the population of 9 million has achieved 80% full vaccination of adults 60% of the general population. Now they looking to lockdown because 400 fully vaccinated persons sick 240 of the fully vaccinated SEVERLY ill. Let's discuss that and imagine if the BVI reach that 80% herd immunity crap all hell will break loose.

Israel's population is over 9 million people and you are here talking about 240 vaccinated people being severely ill with COVID? How many unvaccinated are severely ill with COVID as well? If you are going to tell the story, tell all of it. The reality is whether you like the vaccine or not the data globally and even right here says it all! What are the chances of over 30 people dying in the BVI in 3 weeks, most of whom are under 50 and all of whom unvaccinated. That says a whole lot.

LIES!!!!!!! ALL persons that died were NOT unvaccinated. Stay and let the GOV blind you with lies. Vaccinated people died too but they won't want you to know that. Vaccinated people died too. Stop behaving that because you're vaccinated you are better or more special. Vaccinated people are dying too. Let that sink in.

        @SB and to SB

The population is over 9 million but over 70% of the fully vaccinated have contracted Covid 19. The 400 severely cases are being studied by their health officials to find out what went wrong. It may look like a small number compare to the population but that can yield an answer to what is happening. Yes they are also unvaccinated patients included in the study. If you're wondering how I know this, I check these countries website every week to update myself on what happening. They have the same issues as us here in the BVI.

Erroneous? What did your governments tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt? Vaccinate and you will have mild symptoms and no hospitalization. That was a lie.

You are so right. Look at what's happening in Israel, Gilbraltar and the UK and few others. All these countries have over 80% of their population fully vaccinated. They also have the highest rate of covid cases in the fully vaccinated. The UK at one point would not give to vaccine to person under 30 years and the will not be giving it to anyone under 18 and under. Germany cease giving Astra Zeneca to the population 30 and under. Look at Sweden, never had a lockdown or curfew and have fewer cases and have natural herd immunity. Look at Australia the have a low case count37,000(last week) and they still in lock down. A notable scientist cant remember his name said herd immunity cannot be gather by vaccination only. A few even believe we have already past the peak. Also, today the USA announce that a booster will be needed. Israel even wants to re vaccinate their citizens.

Also look up Dr. Robert Malone, he is the guy that invented the mRNA. You will be surprise what he has to say.

There are other drugs out there that can help with this but as long as fearmongering, money and power is involve this will not happen. There is one thing that can truly solve this and it is the hardest thing most of us have difficulty doing and that is being honest. Honesty is the key to solving this pandemic. It is time for us to demand it from each other and our leaders.

Just about 100% unmitigated caca. It’s one hospital in Israel in an area of old people where just about 100% are vaccinated. Israels deaths per million of population is 709. BVI is already 1215 with more to come because of the unvaccinated fools.

99.2 % of the hospital admissions and deaths in the USA are the unvaccinated

you seem to be mixing up facts copying and pasting in your head and its not working. Sweden failed in their experiement compared to all its neighbouring countries.
Astra Zeneca is not a mRNA and if you don't know that then perhaps you shouldn't blog...

The common factor in Israel, Gibraltar, Australia is the large number of Pfizer mRNA vaccines they are using. This vaccine does not trigger the immune response in a traditional way. It is a new technology that "tricks" the immune system into responding to the virus. This seems like a bad idea, and shows that even brilliant scientists sometimes lack common sense. Or maybe this is all by design.

The Astrazenica uses harmless animal samples of the virus. This will prime the immune system but will not make you sick. This is how traditional vaccines work. Even if you do get the dangerous virus from somewhere else then this vaccine is close to 100% effective in preventing serious illness and death.

Indeed, the VI must be and stay vigilant. In the initial stages of battling Covid-19, a global pandemic and an opportunistic and deadly virus, the VI fared fairly well. It locked down its coastal borders, curfew, isolate, quarantine, mask up, social distance, stayed in secure bubbles, avoided crowds, adhered to hygienic protocols….etc, earning itself some Covid dividends. Through the end of June 21, it had approx 300 Covid cases and 1 Covid-related death. Then in a flash those hard-earned dividends acquired through much sacrifice vanished.

Based on the low numbers, I will take a wild a..s guess (WAG) that the BVI and may be some of its residents got a little too relax, too overconfident and too cocky, letting its guard down. And the opportunistic deadly virus struck with a vengeance. The number of active cases skyrocketed to 1604 and 36 precious lives snuffed out prematurely.

Moreover, at least a few things are clear. First, Covid is a formidable and opportunistic deadly enemy/virus that will attack given the opportunity. Second, the BVI must be prepared and ready to battle the deadly virus, ie, prevent, contain, mitigate, vaccinate….etc. Third, the virus can be easily spread quickly through a small community by, perhaps, a few people. Fifth, the BVI must find out what changed, causing the spike in Jun/Jul and thrusting the BVI into a crisis. Sixth, the VI must avoid letting the crisis evolve into a calamity. And seventh, it must avoid the behaviour(s)that contributed to the astronomical rise in active cases and the unprecedented loss of precious lives. Past bad assumptions and behaviours cannot be repeated.

Be vigilant, be safe and be well. Get vaccinated. The evidence is overwhelming that the vaccines are safe and effective.

What is sad is that COVID affected the elderly and sick initially, the new strain affects all including our children...it is a disgrace that adults would not do everything possible to protect our children and vaccinate, social distance and follow guidelines. . This speaks of out blatant lack of humanity and lack of responsibility. Instead you are quick to blame the government, the hospital, everybody but yourselves. Grow up.
